    Rear differential fluid change

Hey guys, I feel I need to change my rear differential fluid. My car has 83xxx miles on it and the rear end cover bolts are really rusted. I'm afraid i'm going to break a bolt when i try to take the cover off.. Has this happened to anyone? Should i be worried or are the bolts strong enough? Thanks.

Just use some good penetrateing oil and let it soak for a a while. You Can always use an easy out to get the bolt out if you had to. Also a little heat would help if you have issues. You should be ok, just don't use a 3/4" drive breaker bar with a cheater.

Remove the 10 bolts from the cover and let the fluid drain out, and it will stink badly. It takes about 2.5-3 quarts to refill it. Get a new gasket or a gasket maker at a local parts store and you are good to go.

hose those bolts down with pb blaster and let them sit for a little while and you'll be fine.

The fill plug is in the passenger side of the carrier near the pinion. Remove with 3/8 drive extension. Fill housing to the bottom of the fill hole, reinstall plug. After running the car, and a complete cool down, it's a good idea to recheck the level,,,sometimes they need a topping off.
