Need opinion on rear end problem

I bought a 99 z28 recently and the gear were whining a little. Well i am going ton have to replace the whole rear end. The shop quoted me a ridiculous 1700 to redo it. I can get a complete rear from billy grahams with basically no miles on it for around 650. Would that be the best way to go or could i do better?

Are they stock 3.42s? Just thinking someone might have put aftermarket 3.73 or 4.10s in it???? I bought a low mileage complete rear from a friend who purchased a strange 12 bolt. Neither car had traction control and it was an easy install.

I wasnt clear. The gears have dug all into the carrier and tore the bearings up and everything else. Its not just a little gear whine. I am lucky it hasnt totally come apart going down the road.

Used 10 bolts are for sale all the time for $300 or less. I sold mine for $100 when I bought my 12 bolt. DO NOT pay $1,700 for another 10 bolt.

I just recently bought a 2000 SS Camaro and I noticed a noise coming from the rear of the car. Don't know if its the rear end or bearings. I'm going to pull the tires this weekend an check the bearings out. The car only 49,000 miles on it, runs great, one owner (Older guy like me :-)) just when I coast I hear the noise. Oh, Its a automatic...

dude ive broke my 10 bolt hella times and the only reason i havent got a 12 bolt is cuz i fix thhe rear myself to save money..but shit DO NOT SPEND 1700 DOLLARS ON THIS....if you were planning to...just save 500 more dollars for a 12 bolt or 9 inch...cuz if it breaks again ad 1700 now to the 1700 later and you coulda done 12 bolt and some suspension.....
