Missing stall converter and idle speed
I had my A4 tranny replaced last March because it got caught in rising flood water. Nothing special but I had a 2800 stall in it. So the pump goes out on it last month and I take it back for warrantee work.
When I get it back the idle is off. It will idle at 950 at the light, but I driving on the interstate and I shift to N, it idles at 1500-2000. It has driven me crazy. The shop says they cleaned the MAF and the filter. So, I think about getting it tuned, but I balked at the $500 they want to charge. So I'm thinking the shop damaged the MAF. So I order a new one. At the same time I pull the IAC and clean it. Pull the throttle body and clean it.
Before I can install the new MAF, my son asks me to spin the tires for some of his friends. I hit the gas and not much happens. I start watching a little closer and the tranny's not slipping like it did. So I have taken it back to the shop and am fighting with them about putting in a 2800 stall and pulling the OEM out.
So here's my question, if I was running with a 2800, then go back to a non slipping torque converter, would it cause my idle to be off?
Thanks for your help.

I think it could if you have a bigger than stock cam in there and it was tuned for that stall. THe reason I think so is that its used to having that stall area and not having to put so much out just to idle. Now it is under a greater load at idle causing it to idle lower....Thats what Im thinkin but go ahead and correct me if im wrong guys.

It does have a stronger cam. I forgot to mention it.
Before I bought the car, it was tuned with the cam, a head job and the stall converter.
Thanks,

Sounds to me like the problem is in your tuning. If you put a stock convertor back in there and were tuned for the 2800, that should be the problem. Either get the 2800 verter back in, or get retuned for a stock verter.
