Gears??
I'm just wanting some of your opinions on what gear ratio to go with in my 99 TA M6? let me know I was thinking of running 3.73 but i'm not quite sure

3.73's are a good mix of low down speed and still driveability. People have gone with 4.10's and live with it, but it kills your top speed. You should be happy with the 3.73's then again that 10 bolt doesn't last long especially in m6's.

thanks for the input guys. how many rpm is too many on a set of 4.10 at 65mph? I would think the top end would be fine with either one. the rear end is my weak link im sure but for a weekend street car it should be fine . until i leave a red lite a little too high.

The A4 got an option so why not the M6 crowd. I guess the A4 still didn't get the 3.73 though.

so for regular street driving and not much highway the 4.10's or 11's are perfect for better acceleration? Cause i don't do much highway but i was always worried about the rpms being too high but now i guess it is not really an issue. sorry if i'm thread jacking but how much does a swap usually cost?

4.30's here and wouldn't have it any other way with my 9".
I had 3.90's in my old 10 bolt and always wished I did the 4.10's. (I felt it was a huge waste of money) So when I got the 9" I said screw it and got the 4.30's and really glad I did. Even with all my mods and daily driving my car I still get 23-26 MPG. and the acceleration factor of the 4.30 gear is well worth it.
At 65 mph I am still at 1900-1950 RPM in 6th On the highway. At the track with 26.5" tall tires I trap at around 6450 RPM and still have a little gear left in 4th. Right in the sweet spot.
So, I would tell you that 3.73's are a huge waste of time and money for a 6 speed car and you will barely notice the difference from your stock 3.42's.Last edited by Jays00ss; 10-15-2008 at 06:23 PM.

I knew you'd want that bump to the 4.30s!! You won't be disappointed. I originally had 4.30s in a nine inch before trading for a 10 bolt with 3.73s due to financial issues, and I've been in a rut since. **cough bought a new truck, cough**!! I am so disappointed with these gears though. My cam is set up for deeper gears and is a total dog now because of the 3.73s. Trap speed went from 120s to 113.5 in the 1/4 and lost .7 second.

so 4.30 is the way to go? I think I would like the acceleration of a 4.30 over the 3.73 just not sure how bad it will be rev'd out at 65-70 im only running 275-40-17 on my car so will the 4.30 be too much or would it be just right. can you get the 4.30 to work on the stock carrier ?

I don't believe you can get a 4.30 in the 10 bolt.
Could be wrong, but pretty sure it is 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56.
Do you race the car? 4.10's are good for most.

I don't race the car at the track all the time mostly red lite to red light.

I think 4.10's would be more than enough.
4.56's are for those running taller tires and drag cars.
4.30's are for those serious about racing their street car.

Old school trick I used to do on my old muscle cars (If there was no tag) is to jack up you ass end, turn your right wheel 1 whole revolution, and then count how many times your driveshaft turns in the time it takes to turn your tire. if the drive shaft turns a little more than 4 times, you have 4.10's probly. Less than 4, 3.90's 3.73's or stock 3.42's.
Its a rough quesstimate but it will give you somewhat of an idea, without pulling the pan and counting the teeth.
