Could be wrong, but pretty sure it is 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56.

Do you race the car? 4.10's are good for most.
They indeed do make a 4.30 for a 10 bolt, but as they say they tend to get more brittle and prone to chipping gears the lower you go.

With the 7.5" ring gear the teeth on a 4.30 set are so small, you can bust them with stock power at the track. Noise also becomes a factor with 4.10's & higher. It's pretty hard to keep 4.10's quiet, let alone 4.30's.

I concur. The 9" is very quiet with the 4.30's. I have very little to no noise issues with my rearend (other than my Detroit Locker which I really don't notice anymore as well).

what does gear noise sound like? is it all the time or just under hard acceleration?

My 4.10's whine all the damn time, under any acceleration, at any speed. It's a higher pitched sound than anything else on the car, and it's definitely noticeable. It's not a big deal for me, since I'm planning on a 9" rear soon, but other people riding in my car usually ask "what's that noise?"

does more teeth cause the whine? is it only in a 10 bolt that they make the noise?

So, I would tell you that 3.73's are a huge waste of time and money for a 6 speed car and you will barely notice the difference from your stock 3.42's.
I went with the 3.73 because I do a lot of interstate driving (600 miles one-way twice a month for quite awhile). Yes, it's not much difference than the stock 3.42, but it does make it a little more fun to play now and then. Of course, if I were drag racing it I would definitely go with the 4.10.

I'm pretty sure it's the size of the teeth that causes the whine (high ratio + small gear = small teeth). From what I've heard, it's worst on the 10-bolt. F-body drivers with properly set up 12-bolt or 9 inch rears rarely (if ever) complain about gear noise. It's pretty bad on the 10-bolt, though.

I would have to say no and no. Usually when the gears are making noise it's because they are not aligned (meshed) properly or worn. Anyone that has ever swapped out gears for a living can tell you that it is not as easy as just pulling one out and putting one back in. There are many diagrams on-line that can show you the results of what the gear teeth look like when they are too tight/loose.

Mine does the same thing at high speeds. The gears have been changed out to 4.10's and I am assuming they don't have it shimmed up correctly. When I get time this winter I will pull the cover off and examine the teeth to see what the issue is.

I believe a broken tooth can cause whining as well.
