With the 7.5" ring gear the teeth on a 4.30 set are so small, you can bust them with stock power at the track. Noise also becomes a factor with 4.10's & higher. It's pretty hard to keep 4.10's quiet, let alone 4.30's.

what does gear noise sound like? is it all the time or just under hard acceleration?

My 4.10's whine all the damn time, under any acceleration, at any speed. It's a higher pitched sound than anything else on the car, and it's definitely noticeable. It's not a big deal for me, since I'm planning on a 9" rear soon, but other people riding in my car usually ask "what's that noise?"

does more teeth cause the whine? is it only in a 10 bolt that they make the noise?

Mine does the same thing at high speeds. The gears have been changed out to 4.10's and I am assuming they don't have it shimmed up correctly. When I get time this winter I will pull the cover off and examine the teeth to see what the issue is.
I believe a broken tooth can cause whining as well.
