To gear or not to gear?!?!?
Ok guys I need your help! Tonight at work I was talking to some guys, and telling them that I am going to put 3.73 gears in my car. Let me start by saying I don't do much drag racing, and that I just want a little more umph.....some of the guys were saying don't do it, cause you will just wear out the motor quicker.....and some were saying don't do it cause you will be driving on the highway at extreme RPMS..... and some guys were saying that you won't get shit for traction.....they also said that , i should stick with the stock gears caust that is what is best for my car. WHAT THE HELL SHOULD I DO?!?!? I just need some opinions from you guys......please help...... below is my mod's as of now.....please let me know your opinions or suggestions!
2000 Arctic White trans am, ws6 hood, ws6 air box, slp lid, slp smooth bellows, slp loudmouth exhaust, shift kit, rebuilt trans, LS6 intake, 3.73 gears, Shaner S3 p/p throttle body, and a tune . SFC. C6 ZO6 rims 18" in back 17" in front. Drilled and slotted rotors.

Are you a A4 or M6? I say do the swap. Only bad part is a little more gas on highway trips and it won't be that much. Sounds like most of your co-workers are not very performance minded or knowledgeable.

How much of a difference are you guys noticing in rpms? And it IS my daily driver. I just don't want my motor to go because I am always in higher rpms.

as far as traction, you will have to launch a little different but being that your an auto, you will love the 373's. when i got my 373's in my SS it was the most noticeable mods for the price.

I think you would really like the 3.73's. Your not going to be turning crazy rpm's on the highway with them. They are popular gear for a reason seeing they work well all around. Don't listen to crazy people and let them get you worked up over rumors and made up stuff. You can always find a used 10 bolt from a 6speed for next to nothing and try out the 3.42's.

What are you still waiting on?
Go get them 3.73 put in already.
Your rpms at 70 will be 2400 and will go up 400rpm/10mph
there is a rpm calc somewhere around this forum(or at least the link to it)
for gear/tire/tranny.
with those tires you should'nt spin too much.
not as much as I did with the 245/50/16
now go to jegs and order the gears but not the install kit if your car is 2000 or newer I think.Just have to get the parts seperate and then wait for the brown truck and then get that beast to the shop and get the rubber to the road bro

Gears all the way those guys are just throwing BS your way the only thing that happens when you get them is gas mileage will drop a tiny bit but nothing to be concerned with i mean we dont buy these cars for the gas mileage. Besides everytime you launch the car the big kid inside of you will be thanking you for every dime you spent on those gears.

1st let me say when you do a gear swap, Make sure you buy a master rebuild kit and change all your bearings and seals.
To break in your new gears, use regular gear oil with no posi additive. Then You need to heat quench the gears 3 or 4 times (drive about 10 miles, then stop for at least an hour to cool the rear end lube), then take it easy for a few hundred miles, varying your speed and don't go over 65 mph. After 500 miles change your rear end oil preferably with red line or royal purple (you wont need posi additive with these 2) if you use regular gear oil you will need posi additive. While the cover is off look over everything and do a torque check on all the bolts (the shop that did your gears should do this for free as a part of the gear swap) Then give her hell!!!
