Do your Motive Gears Whine?
I had some motive perf. 4.10 gears installed and did heat cycles and drove easy for the 270 miles i've put on her so far. after 250 miles they started to whine incredibly loud... louder than my music and the engine at 3K rpms. I never drove it hard either. has anyone else experienced anything like this. I also just changed the fluid to get the same result. i'm taking it back to the guy that installed it sometime tomorrow and hopefully he can fix it. also, the gears looked fine when i had the diff. cover off and there was a minimal amount of metal shavings on the magnet.

83 Z28 new project- 98 Formula WS7-sold:(
Slow speeds on deceleration they are noisey, cruising at 70-80mph they are really loud also. I know the shop that did them had them out like seven times to get it to where it is now by adjusting the depth. 373's by the way

I have Motive 3.90's. I went through the entire break in process just as instructed, however that didn't help very much.
I get a bit of whine around 65 - 80 mph and it is easily noticeable on the highway. That being said, the cutout and radio certainly help drown out the noise. I really wish we could find a way to get an aftermarket rear gear setup without whine! I didn't have a bit of gear whine with the GM 3.42!

For any of you guys running Motive Performance 4.10's, what backlash did you use to keep the gears the quietest (the spec is .007"-.009")? I just got a set, and I'm thinking about installing myself.

All Black- 83, 87, 02 All WS6 T/As
I had 3.73s in mine before my spider gear went.. super quiet.. but then again, I had a good installer... replaced with a 12 bolt.. but the ring and pinion were still perfect.

Have had mine on for almost 500 miles now and zero noise, better than stock even, but i think that was bearings not the gears

if your gears are installed properly and broken in right there shouldn't be any whine...

Not true at all. Ive done a bunch of gear sets in Jeeps for offroad racing and I've noticed that it depends on the company and what type of machines they use to cut the gears from the factory as well as what the gears are made of.
Installation could be the issue here however most of the motive gears Ive installed on 4x4s are noisy no matter what. I usually always go with superior and have never had an issue with noise on my baja Jeep or my old 93 LT-1 trans am

On a daily driver for the first 500 miles you should never drive for anymore than an hour at a time. For insurance after the first 500mile break in period is over I also change the diff fluid.
