    Differential gears

I've been looking at 4.10 and 3.73 ring and pinion change for my 2000 WS6. I've been told that by changing to one or the other that there would be a noticeable difference in performance. I've also been told that Pontiac installed the best combination for performance and the change isn't needed and won't make a bit of difference. Does anybody know what the WS6 came with to begin with and is it worth the expense to change it to 4.10 or 3.73?

    Thanks,

In before "omg...go 9" or 12-bolt...stocker will break under stock power"

    Stock Gearing = 3.42

3.73s won't give you a real noticeable change, 4.10s will. You will need to get your computer reflashed so the Speedometer will read correctly.

if you have an a4 get 3.73 if you have an m6 then 4.10-atleast these are the most popular choices.

Pontiac geared the car best for milaege and performance. As the others said, for an auto, go 3:73s. For a manual, go 4:10s.

The 10 bolt will not break under stock power, if you know how to drive. And 3.73 gears in a Six Speeder will make a difference. And still keep the rpm's low at 60. Out of my mods, the gears have made the most difference. Make sure to get a new carrier along with the ring and pinion.

Give me one good reason to put 3:73s in a six speed instead of 4:10s..

When I went from 3:42s to 4:10s my gas milaege didn't drop even one whole mile per gallon. Not a good reason.

5 speeds did good all around with 3.73's and the way a 6 speed is geared 4.10's would be good preformance and still run a decent RPM down the highway. From 3.42 you will not loose but maybe a tenth or 2 to the mile per gallon ratio. If you had a 2.73 gear and did a lot of highway then changed to a 4.10 you would see about a half to a full mile lost but the differance between 3.42's and 4.10 is 0.68. guys change from 2.73's to 3.73's in auto's all the time and actually don't loose the millage because most drive around town and it helps thier millage.

As reference, in my M6 I went from 3.42 to 4.11 when I bought my 9" and the RPM at 70MPH went from 1500 to 1900.

It feels like a night and day difference. The car really woke up.

I also got LTs and a Y at the same time with a tune, so granted I added some HP too, but you can definitely "feel" the difference with the gearing change.
