Change gears, anything else to do at that time?
I'll be changing my gears to 3.90's shortly on my A4. Is there anything else I should consider in the way of mods? Like a fuel pump? (I have all the suspension upgrades already.)
65k miles on the car and pushing 360 rwhp. If I drop the axle to do the gears, is it a good time to drop $200 on a pump? I've always suspected that the pump faulters at 5500 rpm.
Any thoughts?

you wont be dropping the rear axle housing to change the gears it all just comes out of the housing
i know some people dont like cutting on there cars but you can cut a hole to axcess the fuel pump which is the easiest way to change the pump
if you are going to change the gears i would consider getting a spool
other than that just make sure you get the posi fluid additive and you should be good
search fuel pump access and you will see what im talking about on cutting an access hole

i guess you might just be pulling the whole housing out for the fun of it,in which case yeah go ahead with the pump

Thanks guys! I was maybe going to drop the axle for two reasons; 1. easier to work on it on the bench instead of jack stands, and 2. if I mess up, I can truck it to a friends house.
If I skip the fuel pump, I'll leave the axle in.
I'm not a fan of cutting a whole in the trunk floor, so if I had to do the pump at a later date I'd drop the tank..... does that require the axle to be out?

Way eiser to work on a rear with it out of the car, especially for gears, that way you can get everything set up comfortably, and if yu do mess up yeas take it to some one who can fix it. Since you plan on doing gears, replace the bearings and races while you are at itm espeically the pinion bearing as you have to take it out any ways to the gear swap.
A spool I would advise against unless youa re doing strickly track work in a straigh line. It willd rive you crazy on the street taking sharp corners. As wella s few other annoyances. I have found my factory LSD to be plenty.
As for droping the tank, the factory manual suggests removing the exhaust and heat shield.

Thx, I got everything out of the axle. Decided to leave the rear in the car, unless I have problems. I will begin installing the 3.90s this weekend. I just bought wheel bearings and seals too. I convinced myself the fuel pump isn't needed yet. Save the $$ for the PCM tune.
Dang I hate the smell of gear oil.
