Can someone describe how gears sound toasted?

I think I may need new gears, I don't know how to describe it. I don't have the money for a new rear end, plus I am selling the car. So I am thinking about just putting new gears in. It makes a pretty nasty noise from the rear end when I get on it now, it's from the rear. But if it is the gears, what ratio should I go with? If I am changing them, rather have an upgrade for a month before I sell it.

pull the cover and see what falls out. other than that look at the teeth on the gears and see if the wear pattern is constant or all over the teeth. Could be a bad carrier unit, axel or pinion crush washers causing the pinion to float back and forth.

It's almost like a grinding noise, I also never played with an Axle and not willing to do this on my own (stepdad is out of town, local shop it goes). Think $700, should cover what ever is wrong? It still drives, but grind/clunking noise is coming from the rear end, Axle area, pretty damn sure.

I just bought a used Camaro rearend out of a manual?(3.42s) for $200. Nothing wrong with it. The guy just wanted to upgrade to a 9 inch before he started bracket racing his car. I had to use my backing plates but that was it. Look around and call some shops around you that work on f bodies and see what you can find. You might be able to save some cash. The most I ever paid for a gear install including parts on my Camaro was $550.

I was expecting it to be about $700 with a tune from frost. So I am about right... Does anyone know any F-Body shops down in Orlando? Around here there's just general shops.

You have UMI over thier. Call them and see if they have info on rear gear shops, or specialty shops in the area. I would think of finding a good used rear. and if any shop says it is going to cost you more than $200 to install it tell them they are smoking crack and you will give them a buck 50 for pissing you off. lol

Ive wanted to say this since I saw the thread title.

What do bad (roasted) gears sound like?

    1. WHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEE

    2. argaglaleealbbleebble bang bang aragrablkeaglre

    3. When your car doesnt go forward and makes no noise at all.

Take the cover off, and hold your hand out to catch some lucky charms. I did this with my 12 bolt, and I got a whole basket of crushed up goodies that came out.

Hmmm, it's more like a really bad grind clink type noise.

Ya, I know them noises.... I'm betting at least 14 ring teeth half gone...
    Any betters ???
3.73's would be a good street / track gear... As far as programming, find a cheap hand held for that.

Not worth getting a tune by frost done? I was going to wait, till I get the LS6 cam. I can get one for $150 from the local dealer, new... Of course, supporting mods.

After you do a cam mod or other bolt on mods, you will need a tune, but you need gears now, so if you change the ratio to like, 3.73's, you will need to adjust the ecm for that. You can find a cheap hand held that will do this for you. If you do a frost tune later, put the hand held back to stock, before the tune, then sell it off again ! Here's one....
