4.10 Gear question
With 4.10's will i still be able to do 155¿
I want to get a gear set but i'm wondering how much top end will i lose
4.10 is a better bet then me going with 3.73 right?Last edited by Fade2Black; 12-12-2005 at 06:26 AM.

with a six speed you can still go 160. with an auto, i donno. 4.10s dont like holding those speeds though. if you're just doing the gear inside the stock housing, you will run into heat problems. even 12 bolts get hot with a 4.11 gear spinning that fast. its not that its a major problem, but long trips of holding 100+ mph will kill diff oil.
i had 4.10s in the stocker, then it broke. now i have 4.11s in the Strange 12 bolt. fun gear. The Haddad Motorsports (haddadmotorsports.com) car has the strange 12 bolt with a 3.73. honestly i like them both. you also get less noise from the 3.73Last edited by Z95SSCLONE; 12-15-2005 at 11:12 AM.

Ok. I can still do what my speedometer says but what about top end acceleration? Will I still get up to speeds like 150 just as quick? quicker? or slower?
Just trying to figure out how 4.10's will effect my highway racing
I never do long trips of 100+ MPH i dont even do long trips nor go over 100 for more then 5 min. usually when im going 100+ i get to where im going pretty quick

I just put a set of 4.10's in my car and they are great. You will still be able to run as fast as you wish. As far as the heat issues I wouldn't worry with it. Run a good oil like Amsoil 75w-90 and be done with it. Deeper gears will always cause more heat no matter what. In a vehicle's rear end if they are set up correct it won't cause any problems. A boats lower unit with a big block in front of it turns way more times than a car and they will run them at full throttle for hours on time with no problems.

The point you are missing is that nobody spends any time at 155mph, so why fret over it.

you fret because when your 18 years old, thats what you have to fret about. No offense. i was the same way. yes you can go 160mph and you'll get there quicker. with an M6 and 4.10s lots of cars will have trouble beating you on the highway. i have an LT1. the motor has since blown up, but the first motor put down 265 to the rear. i could pull LS1s and Srt4s all day long above 55mph

As stated by someone else you are 18, getting up to 155 can/will lose you your license for a long while and also kiss that insurance goodbye too. Think about your safety man.

I asked for info on something i didnt know about not something i know
I was told i would lose a lot of top end so i want to find out if its true or not
Saying 155 is being more specific then saying will i lose top end
AS I'VE SAID I WENT 155 ONCE SO WTF ARE YOU CRYING ABOUT? you dont live near me so you dont have to worry about me on the road
And your right this is a forum but a forum where i started a thread to ask a question and get something cleared up not get questioned or bagered about how fast im going to be going
I WANT TO BE ABLE TO LEAVE PEOPLE ON THE FREEWAY STILL AND MY QUESTION WAS ANSWERED BY Z95SSCLONE Thank you, no offence taken
Hurley why do you get on here and say grow up? thats not necessary, sounds like you need to grow up.Last edited by Fade2Black; 12-22-2005 at 06:42 PM.

just one last piece of advice. anytime you start a post about going over the speed limit, breaking the law, racing, or doing something wreckless, there will be people who will get upset. you're going to have to expect some resistance when you ask questions that relate to those topics. the truth is we all have these cars and do silly things with them, so for one person to tell another about how they should drive their car is kind of hippocritical. there im done

Navy Blue Metallic- 2002 Camaro SS
Hey Fade2 Black,
The internal ratios for a T-56 (at least for 2002) are: 1st: 2.66, 2nd: 1.78, 3rd: 1.30, 4th: 1.00, 5th: 0.74, 6th: 0.50, Reverse: 2.90. Assuming you are using stock tires (275/40R-17), they have a diameter of 25.66 inches and a circumference of 80.61 inches.
That means that if you could turn 6000 rpm in 6th gear with a 3.42 rear end, you could go 267 mph.
Simple fact is you can't go that fast in a stock F-Body. Top speed for a stocker is in 5th gear, and is 161mph (electronically limited). So, at 161 mph, you'd be turning 5338rpm in 5th gear.
If you went to a 4.10, you'd still make 151 mph in 5th gear at 6000 rpm, but you'd have to shift into 6th to get to 161mph (at 4323 rpm ... IF the LS1 makes enough power at taht speed to hold 161 mph ... I don't know).
You will accelerate faster with a 4.10 rather than with a 3.42, but you will turn more rpm, wear out the engine faster, and generate more heat in the rear end. If that's OK with you, go for it.
However, the stock rear end is pretty weak, as is the clutch. When you put more teeth into agear in the same confined space, it has less metal in it. That means the 4.10 rear gear will be weaker than a 3.42.
So, if you go to a 4.10 and speedshift often, expect to break the rear end, the clutch, or both.
My 2002 Camaro SS is fairly stock and I don't street race, at all. I advise you to do the same. A track is legal and more fun since you don't have to worry about cops or killing someone. And ... people will help you go faster, at least with advice. After you show up a few times and aren't a jerk, they may even help with some hands-on work.
Try it. Road course or drag strip, your choice. Bring tires. It's best to trailer the car to the track since if you break it, you can still drive home.Last edited by GregP; 12-24-2005 at 07:14 PM.

Now for my question:
I was going to have a shop do it, but decided I am going to do it myself. I called one of the "performance" GM dealers and they told me they do a "break-in" period on their gear installs. They end up keeping it several days. After install, they drive it "around the block" let it cool over nite and do it again for a "few" days. I forget the exact formula
Any one else ever heard of that technique???

It's not really a technique it's just normal gear break-in period...
