3rd gen gears into a 4th gen

Hey guys i have a question for ya. I have a 95 trans am that came factory equipped with 2.73 posi. Well before I aquired the car someone switched that out in favor of a 3.42. I've recently ripped 4 teeth off the pinion gear in some "spirited driving" and now it needs to be fixed. I've tried calling the local salvage yards around here but to no avail. I'm not buying the whole rear housing when all I need is the pinion gears. I called the local pontiac dealership and they were wanting to rape me to the tune of almost 1100 dollars for the gears. I've been thinking that it seems almost any ring and pinion gear out of a gm rear wheel drive should bolt on. I know 3rd gens are plentiful around here so if one will fit that's what's going back in it so I can get it sold. If anyone has any advice for me i'd greatly appericate it.
