3.73 or 4.10
I am having trouble deciding what to get 3.73 or 4.10. A friend tells me if i go with 4.10 i will have to get bigger tires because of the turn ratio. If I keep my stock tires should i go with 3.73? I want to install 4.10 bit I don't want to go to a bigger tire.

If you install a bigger tire, you are counter acting the effect of the better gear. Is your car an auto or a manual? Makes a big difference in what is ideal.
With an auto, 3.73 seems to be the best compromise between acceleration and cruise rpm. 4.10's with an auto is a bit much for some. Also, if you have an auto, consider getting a stall converter instead of gears. It gives you great acceleration, and keeps your cruise rpm the same.
With an M6, you have two overdrives, so 4.10's or an even deeper gear is just fine. You may need stickier tires to get the car to hook properly with either one, and you'll need to reprogram the VCM with either a handheld tuner or computer tuning to get the speedo to read correct.

Don't know about the whole changing tire sizes. I have 4.10's in my 00 SS and stock 275/40/17's. No problems here. If it is an a4 I would go with 3.73's. All you have to do is get your speedo recalibrated either way.

I went with the 3.73. I think i screwed up with the mechanic though. Are they that hard to install that a pro mechanic is having problems. I just hope i don't end up with noisy gears.

Pro mechanic shouldn't have any problems, but it's not a simple remove and replace.
If you're farming out the work, it would be best to take it to a drivetrain specialist.

whining will depend on the material the gears are made out of, how the teeth are angled and having proper backlash. my 3.73 AAM gears are quite as stock. the motive 4.10 gears i had howled like there was no tomorrow. installing them is just real time consuming. here's tech article i did.

At the top of this page is a link to a how-to and many rear end questions.
