Wouldn't 4:56's defeat even haven first gear that seems really low

Well the problem isn't the 4.56's,,,,it's the crappy 3.06 first gear in the auto overdrive.

The idea is to gear the car so you are crossing the finish line at or just above your shift rpm in high gear (1:1) which is 3rd gear on the auto.

That usually takes at least a 4.10 gear or more on a stockish LS1 that is shifting at 6,000 rpm with a relatively short 26 inch tall tire.

Problem though is when you gear the car properly,,,,first gear is a joke. Which is why most serious racers yank the 4L60 for a trans better suited for racing, such as the 400 turbo,,,,or even the 200R4 would be a better choice than the 4L60E.

i wasnt referring to track use, street. the 4:10's were better for both tho.. and my tires were 315 35 19's or it first would have been a joke

I like 3.73. I think its a good compromise between street and strip. If it were leaning more towards a strip car, then probably the 3.90's.

Personally, it depends on stall and cam selection in the future. You want to build to get the most out of the parts you select.

Those tires are only 27.68 inches tall, not much difference. Only roughly 1.5" from the stockers. Which equates to about 3 mph.

well actually stock is 25.7 so its about 2 inch difference and about 4.7 mph difference. That'll make a 4.11 feel like a 3.81.
At least, according to the online calculators I'm using

Yep, not even enough to worry about as far as I'm concerned.

Ya, that's why I don't really see any big deal about it.

I wouldn't even question it on a car with an overdrive. I still run cars with 4.88's on the street and no overdrive at all. There isn't a tire tall enough that fits on a car to compensate that

that's crazy I barely liked my 3.42s, no OD, and 27.1" tires on my previous Cutlass Supreme.

Ya that's just the way it was done years ago and I never really got away from it.
I find it plenty streetable actually, I'm just not in a hurry to get anywhere. Been on 2-300 mile round trips and actually enjoy it.

Shucks with all these overdrive trannys you guys can have your cake and eat it too. Guess that's why I never understood why people get antsy over installing just a 4.10 gear in a car with overdrive.
