We discussed towing capacities in my trailer thread a while back and it has me thinking. Our Suburban is rated to tow 5,000 lbs. with a 500 lb. tongue weight utilizing a standard hitch. With a weight distribution hitch, the ratings go up to 10,000 lbs. with a 1,000 lb. tongue weight.

Our Suburban is equipped with aftermarket airbags in the rear springs. I understand that the weight distribution hitch spreads the load to the entire truck. However, doesn't the additional capacity created by the airbags have a similar effect to utilizing the weight distribution hitch -- it keeps the ass end up in the air where it belongs.

Is this right? Loaded, our trailer should come in at around 6,500 lbs. Just wondering if the weight distribution setup is really necessary.
