1996 Vortech 350
I have a 1996 RCSB with a 350. hopefully next year i can start my engine build. my truck has about 213K on it now. runs good, but might as well start a engine build before it takes a shit on me. I was thinking about a 383 build but i was told a 406 build would be more inpressive. As most of you may know the vortech engines are very limited on intakes options. I don't want to change it to a marine intake or any other exspensive alternative. the truck is rated about around 325 tq from the factory and i would like to maybe get around 450. What would yall recomend.

Stroke it, cam it, and work the heads. 450 ftlb at the crank. spend more $ on higher compression bottom end as well as on head and cam match you could put 450 down at the rear wheels.
I got an E-mail flyer for a set of worked Vortech heads from Jegs for like under 700 for the set compleate. They had biger valves and light porting work done. pair those up with a 10 or 11 to 1 stroker and a real nice cam with upgaded valve springs and roller 1.6 rockers and... vroom vroom.

gm has a 383-E crate motor just for that then put in a cam and you are all set.

don't plan on revving that thing too high. Other than limited injector options, even with the marine intake and bigger injectors, the manifold itself will be restrictive. And then the Vortec 350 computers can only be tuned to just over 6000 rpm or so. The above mentioned heads from Jegs are Patriot performance vortecs and are very nice imo. I want a set for my truck. Or you could go with Edelbrock e-tec or eBay (I think they're made by pro comp) aluminum vortecs. This will let you build for even more compression leading to more torque and power on pump gas. So i'd have a high compression 383 built with the marine intake, bigger injectors, and a custom groun cam for your engine specs, set to peak well below 6000 rpm. Along with the Patriot vortecs, Edelbrock e-tecs, or Pro comp? aluminum vortecs.
I think if you get an '01-'02 or so 350 van computer you should be able to rev it higher, but you'd have to check that for yourself.

no need to stroke, you can make great power without it. vortec 's are hard to beat right out tha box.

No NEED to, but shifting the torque curve a little lower and fattening it up a little is always nice.

All in what you want out of it. if your going to be towing, i would stroke it. if it is for just playing around on the street, 355 it.
