    Thread restorer

I had to pull a head off my engine. I needed something to clean the threads of the bolts and the block. I picked up this nice little thread restorer from sears. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...hread+restorer. It cleaned up all the threads great and unlike a tap it didn't remove any material. Probaly would work good on all types of damaged threads too.

I have the same set -- use it on all sorts of stuff. Like you said, it does not remove metal like a regular tap. Works great for repairing any damage and for cleaning crud out of threads.

It won't do that. It will only clean or fix threads.

A tap and die set is used to create threads, removing material. This cleans them without removing metal.

Taps and Dies are for quick, on-the-job repairs of damaged threads on bolts and studs. Chase out damaged threads and remove nicks and burrs with out undercutting good threads. Use with standard wrench and light oil. Never use to cut new threads or to renew hardened threads. Files restore damaged external threads any diameter, right or left hand. Just select the proper number of threads per one inch/pitch (mm) and overlapping several good threads, work over the area using regular file strokes.Set contains: 7 SAE Course Dies, sizes: 1/4"-20, 5/16"-18, 3/8"-16, 7/16"-14, 1/2"-13, 9/16"-12, 5/8"-11
    7 SAE Fine Dies, sizes: 1/4"-28, 5/16"-24, 3/8"-24, 7/16"-20, 1/2"-20, 9/16"-18, 5/8"-18

This is the sets discription from the page.. I know what a "Tap and Die" set is, and that my friend is a tap and die set..

Yes i read it. It does say that they won't cut new threads. I never bought it with the intention of making new threads. I used it to clean the sealant out of holes without damaging the threads. If you use a standard tap you will take some material out when you run it through, not good on aluminum. This will remove all the crud without any material.

that's for sure dont take much to ruin aluminum threads.

If you compare the components of the thread restorer set against a standard tap and die set you will see a definite difference. Before I purchased the restorer set, I did utilize my regular tap and die set to clean threads -- but that almost always resulted in removal of metal. Best way to describe the restorer set is that is reshapes the threads back to their correct size and pitch without cutting.

It is a set of taps & dies specifically made so they do not cut new threads, only repairs damaged threads or cleans crap out of them.
The major & minor diameters are made so they don't interfiere with the existing threads.

They are commonly called "Thread Chasers."
