Popped a valve cover to check out the rocker setup and bolted a few more parts onto the engine this evening, including the carb and choke tubes.

Me too. We toured his shop about a year before taking the engine up and I was blown away. I read his book cover to cover in about 2 days. The guy just knows his stuff and was really great to deal with.

The exhaust manifolds went for a ride in the Trans Am today. I took them over to a friend's shop to have the broken off studs removed. He has a fairly well equipped machine shop and it's likely that he'll be able to save them. I also dug through the pile of parts and picked out a couple of items to work on restoring in the evenings next week. Have to keep moving now that the engine and transmission are finally in the chassis.

This weekend was spent scrubbing, blasting and painting small parts. I also pressed the u-joints out of the driveshaft and will try to get that coated with POR-15 later this week. The joints were original as they still had the molded plastic rings (light colored stripe on the end cap in pic) that retains the factory style end caps. As expected, the transmission yoke was shot and will need to be replaced. The transmission always leaked quite a bit of fluid, I just never realized that the side cover was also cracked until the tear down.

Ouch. I'd say that yoke is toast.

Ordered up a batch of parts from Fusicks and Year One last night. Kind of confused on the driveshaft yoke as what I have and what they say I should have are two different things.

Got to spend quite a bit of time in the garage this weekend and made good headway on lots of sub-assemblies. I started Friday night with the driveshaft and wire brushed it as it won't fit in my blast cabinet -- I really didn't feel like sand blasting outside in 30 degree weather. It cleaned up good and is now triple coated in POR-15. I was even able to find a set of U.S.A. made u-joints in stock at the local NAPA. That surprised me.

The air cleaner lid, base, fan, fan clutch, engine accessory brackets, PCV tube, clutch z-bar, and a few other odds and ends were all cleaned, blasted and painted. The air cleaner has a vacuum operated door that closes when the engine is cold so that warm air is drawn up from the exhaust manifold. Unfortunately, it is spot welded to the snout and I wasn't going to remove it since it still operates. The problem is that I did not want the media from my blast cabinet to get into the diaphram which is open on the inside. After thinking about it a bit, I decided that something like clay would work to seal it off. Looking around the shop, I found some 3-M strip caulk from the Corvette restoration. Two small pieces were pressed around the actuator rod and sealed the opening in the snout perfectly.

I found a build code on the air cleaner after lightly blasting it. I decided to tape over this to preserve it just because it is neat finding these things during a restoration. I wasn't even aware that the air cleaner base was marked in this fashion.

I washed the parts in hot soapy water to degrease them and had no issues with paint this time around. Of course, this meant that I needed to make sure all the water was out of the seams so the fan was baked in the oven and I used my heat gun on the air cleaner base.

Two coats of primer and two coats of semi-gloss black. The last pic was taken after the first coat of black so there are some spots where the primer is showing through.

Worked on the fan clutch this evening and used the same technique to run it through the blast cabinet. I packed strip caulk around the seal to protect it and lowered my air pressure by about 20 p.s.i. After the paint dried, I was able to re-assemble the fan and attach a few items to the air cleaner. Hoping to get my exhaust manifolds back soon so I can start bolting parts on to the engine. Over the holiday break, the plan is to drag the radiator support out and start working on it.

    Nice work!

I'd be afraid to drive the car when it was finished.

Too scared to get it dirty..

It'll be the only 'new' Oldsmobile on the road around here, that's for sure.

That's how it was the Corvette -- once it was done I was scared to drive it at first for fear of getting it dirty, chipped, bumped into, etc... Fortunately, that feeling will pass with time and I'll end up spinning the car out on a freeway ramp pointing it in the wrong direction.

    Thanks, Steven!

I have been playing with the engine accessories and brackets over the past several days. After some time off for the holidays I was able to get the power steering pump and hoses back on the car this evening. I think I have to change out the top mounting bolt on the water pump for a stud as my belt alignment looks off just a bit -- need to go back through my teardown photos to be sure though. I also began clean up on the starter this evening and once that is done I will probably move on to the radiator support next.

It looks fantastic, Jeff! I also thinks it's pretty cool you found a build code and preserved it
