    my new car...finally

    '86 monte carlo SS, 415cid BB Chevy, TH400, Reverse full-manual valve-body, 3500 stall converter, NOS, .....
During the 3rd day of cruising the #3 Intake valve broke, turned sideways and buried itself in the piston.....
Man i swear i have the worst luck with cars, i almost get scammed then end up with a time-bomb...oh well
The engine is at Clays machine shop being redone (correctly), align-bore the mains, hone the cylinders, valve job, straighten crankshaft, replace the solid lifter cam with a Comp solid-roller unit .248 duration @ .050"/ .653" lift, new piston, new rod, valve/s, timing set, etc etc
Motor should dyno around 580hp@ 6500 and 550ft lbs @4500

    Sadly now demodded :(

Sweet! With the short stroke crankshaft (3.76") and the increased bore diameter (4.188") coupled with that cam I'll bet it rev's pretty high (6800 or so?). I used to have a .030" over 427 (433 cid) with a flat tappet solid lifter cam close to those specs (250* @ .050" with .600 lift I & E LSA of 108*) and it made power til about 6800 or so. This was in my 67 Camaro back in the 80's. At 12.5 to 1 with a loose converter (3500) and 4.10 gears I got a whopping 4 mpg using a mix of 93 & 106 to make 100 octane. At that time it was a dedicated race car running mid 11's at about 120.

thanx, i'm not real happy with the valve/piston clearance..i'm gonna drop back on the lift and pick up another .060" or find a thicker head gasket...too close for comfort at 6500rpm

I know what you mean. I mocked up my 427 about a half dozen times to get everything correct. Using clay (now that's old school) on the pistons told me that the pistons had to be fly cut. I did this before balancing. When I ended up with .100" on the intake and .125" on the exhaust I felt comfortable. I know it doesn't have to be that deep (more like .080" intake and .100" exhaust) but TRW pistons have a pretty thick crown so I didn't have a problem going that deep. I used Fel-Pro blue head gaskets and mocked it up with a used set.

Blueprinting an engine takes time but it's worth it in reliability alone.
