Diamond in the rough -- really rough.

Here is my favorite project car:

    1966 Buick Wildcat GS Convertible.

    401 Nailhead and Turbo 400.

I have had the car for several years now. Originally, I bought a '66 Buick LeSabre Convertible with a 340/400 that I found locally. It was just too far gone and in my quest for sheetmetal I found a 4 door car in Virginia. Before going to pick it up, the guy then also offered me his Buick project, the Wildcat GS. Originally a Maryland car -- other than the front floorboards and lower rockers, it is actually a solid car.

The guy I bought it from in Northern Virginia had damn near 50 old cars strewn about his property that he had collected. It sounded like a lot of them were estate cars and would probably qualify as "barn finds". I really do not know the history of this one -- it was such a rushed day, down and back with two rollbacks. We actually talked back and forth for over a year before he finally green lighted me on the 4-door. He threw the Wildcat in to the offer about two weeks before we went down. He said he would never have the time to finish it and would rather it go to someone with an interest in this kind of car.

Yeah I know the feeling. The jeep we bought(later WWII era) had a rebuilt engine etc but the body was screwed etc and we picked it up for 3k.

Better to get rid of it cheap then let it rust away IMO. We let go two trucks for the 79, and as soon as I get the 91 driveable im letting a bud borrow it just to keep it on the road

    Sadly now demodded :(

A complete nailhead engine is a find by itself let alone attached to a complete car (no doubt original to the car), and a GS vert at that. Looks to have a Super Turbine 3 speed auto also. Great find!

    Good luck with the resto.

Thank you. The nice part is that I have the chassis from my original LeSabre convertible completed. Not knowing I was going to end up with a Wildcat and a running Nailhead - I had already rebuilt the 340/400. All I really need to do is fix the floors and lift the Wildcat body over onto the completed chassis and I could safely drive it. I sort of like the "Nick Nolte look" and what has come to be known as "patina".

Been working on the Trans Am, Monte Carlo and W-31. They all have precedence over the Buick right now.

I was reading in either MCR or HMM that the word "Grand Sport" like you have on the grill was only used on either the 1st year or the 1st half of the year on those cars. All the others only have the GS badge.

I may be wrong though as Bufords aren't my speciality...

You are the first to mention this. Not sure, so I'll have to look in my books sometime.

No argument here. However, the dual quad intake is drop dead gorgeous on these engines. I had one in my hands at Carlisle -- totally restored intake, carbs, linkage and air cleaner with a $1,500 price tag on it. Should have brought it home.

Right now though I have too many projects on my plate. After I get the W-31 together, I have a '67 Cutlass to turn into a nostalgia drag car. Interested in the Buick? I have a complete running chassis with the high compression 340 and TH400 setting next to it with a 2x4" box steel frame (this was done before I found my parts cars), extra sheet metal, and a 4 door LeSabre parts car with no engine, 1 or 2 Turbo 400's with the BOP bellhousing, a spare 340 c.i. engine, the factory books, etc...
