alot of people are stroking to 402-408 you will not be disappointed. however alot go the iron block route with it.

Most guys go with the 408 (6.0 truck block bored .030" over with a 4.000" stroke). I myself am fond of the aluminum block, I have a 382 (LS1 block bored to 3.905" with a 4.000" stroke). I have no desire to add weight (about 75 lbs) to the front of the car.
The 382 is going in my Avalanche.
I'm putting together a stock 6.0 LS2 block (4.000" bore with 3.622" stroke) for my 2000 Trans Am. It isn't a straight up swap but I get the 6.0L of displacement without adding weight. I can also use a stock rotating assembly which keeps me out of the machine shop.
It's about your budget and your goals. I put budget first because most peoples goals far exceed their budget.
LSX refers to the various types of LS based engines.
Lets run though the numbers:
346 ci = 3.898 bore by 3.622 stroke (LS1, LS6 - stock displacement)
364 ci = 4.000 bore by 3.622 stroke (LS2 aluminum block, LQ4/LQ9 iron block)
382 ci = 3.905 bore by 4.000 stroke (LS1, LS6 - with a stroker crank)
402 ci = 4.000 bore by 4.000 stroke (LS2 aluminum block, LQ4/LQ9 iron block with stroker crank)
408 ci = 4.030 bore by 4.000 stroke (LQ4/LQ9 iron block with .030" overbore and stroker crank)
You can go higher, but you A) need a L92, LS7 or non-GM block or B)have an iron block checked that it can be bored out to .060"; usually sonic tested.Last edited by Chevythunder17; 03-22-2007 at 06:53 PM.

I have a LS1-based 383 with:
TEA 5.3 1.5 heads with 2.05 intake 1.60 exhaust
Forged Dimond pistons approximate compression 11.2 to 1
Forged Eagle Rods 6.125 inch
Forged Eagle Crank
Comp Cams XER 612/244/112 +4
Rollmaster Timing chain
TSP oil pump
I really need a FAST 90 as my HP noses over at 6100, but it still makes well above 450rwhp. I also have unlocked HP in my exhaust and it's tuned conservatively for the nitrous. The torque "curve" is awesome and stays north of 400ftlbs from 3150rpm on up...

What manifold are you running right now? LS1, LS6? What's the torque output peak out at?

i wanna stay off the juice, period. its nice but its not for me. i guess i wanna be neck deep in engine parts trying to do this all myself with little prior experience. i was thinking maybe going with a 4 inch lunati crank, maybe bigger and see what happens after machining. a 427 would be nice, but how much do you all think the block clearancing and all that jazz would run?
i just read about a 455 ci ls1 trans am. 10.97 on street tires??? wow.

It sounds good, but you can do more with less. You need to get a dollar amount of what you want to spend (budget) Besides, the MPH is where the power is, You can run 10.97 with a 346 if you set the car up right. You are talking in the neighborhood of $12-15K for a 427, and even more for a 455 when all is said and done. It's not just the engine that needs upgrades, the whole car is going to need them. You can do a 427, but you need better fueling, a better clutch or transmission, aftermarket rear end, suspension parts, a cage. Just some food for thought.
A 4 inch crank requires just a bit of clearancing (the bottom of the sleeves) and should cost about $200. I had my LS1 block cleaned and clearance for under $200 by a local shop that does race engines.2000 Pontiac Trans Am
Work in progress...

Yes, I would say you definitely need a FAST 90 given your setup. There is definitely more to be had there.

Yep. With the right heads, intake, exhaust and a N/A tune I'd probably be in the 480s, but the car is plenty fun as it sits and I can always hit the button if I need a little extra.
