Turbo or supercharged engine
I have a question about supercharged or turbo engines. I know you have lower compression in the engine. If you take a supercharger or turbo of the engine can it cause a knocking noise in the engine?

Putting on a supercharger or turbo does not change the compression of the motor. A properly installed FI application with a proper tune will not cause knocking in the motor. Knocking is caused by a lean condition typically; not enough fuel. This is why adding a SC or turbo requires an upgraded fuel system; pump and injectors, among other things.
Not sure if that is exactly what you were asking or not.Boost gets you laid, unless your name is Jon.

Running cooler spark plugs is also a necessity.

If you take the turbo or supercharger off the car could it cause a knocking noise in the lower end? If the tune was not redone. And you would need to run at least premium fuel if not at least 100 octane with other engine mods correct. What would happen if you ran lower octane fuel say 87.
I have another thread about the car i was looking at. I cant link it to this one on my phone. I found a 2000 ram air trans am it was 2 and a half hours away that has a knocking noise. There is a video of it. I couldnt get that dealer to come down on the price. I am not afraid of rebuilding the motor. Well it went to auction and is now 15 miles from where i work. I am gonna go look at it tomorrow and if i can get it for a good price i was gonna get it. I seen it had a boost gauge in it and i didnt see a turbo or supercharger in the pictures. That is why i was asking the question.

Running lower octane on a stock motor is not recommended. That can cause knock. Running 100 octane boost on a stock motor is also not recommended. Run 91 or 93 if the motor is stock.
As far as the tune, if it is still tuned to be running a blower or turbo, and neither of those are no longer installed, I would say that would be a big problem.
Where is the knock coming from? The top end or bottom end? I would not drive that car at all. I would trailer it home if you buy it. If the knock is coming from down low it's probably a spun bearing. Not good. If it is coming from the top, it's probably something like a stuck lifter, broken/bent push rod, or may even be piston slap. Hard to tell without hearing it first-hand.

The knock is coming from the bottom end. on start up (cold engine) it sound good. When the engine warms up the knock is there. There was supposedly h/c/i done to the car also. I posted a video the original dealer sent me. whenrom a cold start.Last edited by hooley17; 10-01-2012 at 07:52 PM. Reason: insert video

I know it is not boosted. I seen a boost gauge in the air vent. If i can get it for 3 or 4 grand would it be worth it. The car has alot done to it beside what motor work that was done.

I looked at the car today. The knock is in the lower end of the motor. I offered the guy 3000. He didnt like my offer. I walked away from the same car for the second time in 3 months. It isnt meant to be. I am going to take my time and find a nice car that doesnt need alot of work. Thank you for the info on the motors
