hey guys-- i got a top end knock in my 00 ss with 44k ive been told its a lifter. I removed the valve covers and pulled all the pushrods out hoping to find one bent But they seem to be fine. does the heads need to come off to change the lifters ? does anybody know of a speed shop in the kansas city area that could work on this thing ? im dont want to pull these heads off myself and i figure if i can find someone to fix the lifters than maby ill goahead and put a cam in it. thanks

Yes, the cylinder heads need to come off to change the lifters.

Does the knock come and go or is it sometimes worse then seems to back off?

its got slp long tubes with loudmouth slp mas lid and bellows. hypertech programer and stat centerforce clutch and flywheel and thats about it. it makes the noise all the time no matter if it cold or hot. the faster you rev it the faster it taps. it sounds like its coming right from under the intake.

My lifters are getting worse and I am replacing them w/ LS7's and throwing on Trickflow heads since I gotta yank the originals. Make sure you get new cups.

If it's a tap like you say then prolly is a lifter, I wouldn't drive it. If it's just a ticking I wouldn't worry about it. Either way I'd lose the Hypertech.

The trays could cause this, but I would lean towards something else.

I have a tap that is very intermittent...I think it is a lifter on my pass side, but I don't care because it just sounds like loud piston slap, and goes away after a few min...I'm waiting until winter when i do a cam swap and I'm just gonna pull the heads and swap them then.

Brandon, where did you buy the lifter trays and why do you need to swap them?

I got the lifter trays from GM through my work. They keep the lifter in line so that it deos not turn. They are about $3 each x4 and well worth it to avoid any possible problems.

That exhaust will sound even meaner with a nice cam!

Thanks, I'll call Fred Beans when I get ready to do this then.

Have you seen my new exhaust setup yet? It's posted in the True Dual Read Me sticky! If I'd have known you were selling that true dual pypes setup I would have bought that and had it modified to fit...!!! Oh well.

Opps! I haven't been in that TD thread for a while. Last I saw, you had the TD's dumped, but I just looked in the thread and it looks good!

check your header bolts some times a header leak can sound like a lifter tapping of even a rod bearing going out.

no how do you check the length ? how much does it cost just to replace them ? if it is the lifter does it hurt to drive it? should the thing run bad if it was a lifter ?
