Simplicity is what makes the gen 1 sbc a favorite. The parts interchangability is matched by none other. Plus it's had the luxury of being around for the last 55 years, so parts availability is immense, and prices are cheap.

That's a couple of things the gen III doesn't have going for it yet. It's still not cheap to work on, and parts interchangability is 50/50. Hopefully GM sticks with this platform for another 20 years or so, because it needs to be around a while to drive prices down.

i think the interchangeability isnt bad in the genIII+s ... most things are interchangeable..the thing that killed the ls1/ls6 and such is there small bore...i wish the gen IIIs had a 4" bore...or if not at least have the ability to bore it to a 4" so that the genIV heads could work...

I agree, 1 downfall of the LS1/6 was the small bore size.

The LS3/L92 heads work just fine on the GENIII LQ4/9 engines.

If the volume of production was increased on the LT5 engine the prices would have dropped significantly. If GM agreed to a certain amount of LT5's 20 or 30,000 units per yearMercruiser would have sold them to GM for $2000-3000 a pop.
