And yes, sometimes a 3,000-mile oil change is necessary given certain driving conditions.

Im not saying that 3000 is the end all be all change time, but to the average person that couldnt point to his or her engine oil dipstick if you opened the hood for them should obey this rule. My basis for backing this up is that this truck was an 04 chevy half ton 2 wheeler with less than 100k and at the time of service there was no reading on the dipstick and when I pulled the drain plug no more than 3-4 quarts of oil drained out. Im pretty sure chevy didnt design the 5.3l to operate on 3-4 quarts of oil. I use shaffers oil but I am an old schooler and still change at 3k myself. Hey look at it like this, I service my car more often to help support local economy.

Each to his own... But those who may be the slightest bit curious, here is a UOA of an extended oil change interval:

    Amsoil SSO 0w30 - 18,200 miles - Subaru Outback 06 - link

But one example of many where people use a suitable oil and filter combination designed for extended oil change service, much, much, past 3,000-miles and the oil is qualified as good by an accredited testing lab.

Buster did it and he's more happy than sorry.

Not only that but I am a tad abusive to my engine. Im a drive it like you stole it kinda guy. I just cant help myself. Not to mention im used to my dirtbike which gets serviced every 10 hours and i grew up drag racing alky engines which you have to change oil alot cause it gets very nasty very fast.
