replacing only cam. what else do i need?
i have realized that it is only in my budget right now to do a cam and wait for the heads. im probably gonna do this myself with the help of a buddy (who knows a little more than me). can i replace the cam without disturbing the heads? or do i need to upgrade some parts in the heads?

pushrods and valve springs but all you do is pull the valve covers off.
you dont have to remove the heads at all, thats the beauty of lsx in block cam!

it would be stupid of me to not replace the chain and oil pump, i know. but i have heard good and bad things about both single and double roller chains. whic would be best for me (street driven, raced occasionally, n/a)?

Chain advice in your other thread. And being that you have a 98, the oil pump is pretty much mandatory!

cam, springs, pushrods, oil pump(ported ls6), timing chain(LS2 chain), gaskets, assembly lube ( some don't do this but I did to be safe),and a TUNE. I think that's everything. I would also do an underdrive pulley while you have the car tore down that far. The pulley has to come off anyhow, might as well pick up a few ponies with a smaller pulley.
Don't forget to factor the cost of the tune into the swap.
