Did mine throught the top. Like others, I simply didn't like the idea of trying to get my fromt end that high in the air. I left the transmission installed which posed a couple of challenges, but nevertheless it worked for me.

Leaving the tranny in would make it quite a bit harder.

I saw some pictures of Mr. Louis using what looked like a cherry picker to lift the front of his car. I couldn't figure out what to hook it to for that though. I wonder how high you have to get it also. Would backing up on some ramps and then picking the front end up work? It looked like he set the front up on some jack stands after the engine was rolled out from underneath. I am wanting to do headers, cam, and head swap and wonder if it would be easier to drop the engine. Just can't figure out a way to get it high enough in my garage with no lift.

He used his strut tower brace as the lifting point.

For those of you who drop it through the bottom, Have you done it without the assist of a lift? How did you get the car high enough?

This post is getting kind of old but I will share my two cents anyway. I have done all three. Top, bottom with a lift, and bottom without a lift. I have taken probably one hundred plus LS1s out of F-Bodies and out the bottom is the only way to do it. So simple. So easy. All you have to do is disconnect the connectors on the passenger side strut tower, the ones under the passenger carpet, pull the harness through the firewall, then disconnect the sway bar, cruise on non ASR cars, steering knuckle and couple other misc items such as brake line, fuel line, hoses and thats it. I can swap a motor on an F-body in under four hours. Like I said. Bottom is the way to go...

Big huge jack and jack stands or a chain hoist (or cherrypicker) and strut tower brace.
