    Question on self port

    If i were to port and polish my own heads, would i need to then replace the valve seals and everything? I know i would need to strip the heads down but on the rebuild what all will i need to replace, i have new springs. For my new cam, new intake manifold, oil pump, timing chain and pushrods. What will i need to replace after port and polishing my heads. That is part of the head assembly.

    Just my .02 cents but if you've never ported a head before I wouldn't recommend doing it. You could unknowingly kill some velocity and hurt performance. But if your dead set on doing it I would practice on another Junk head before you mess up your good ones.

    do you really want to port and polish your own heads.

    what will you be using to make sure each CC is equal?

    Also do you flow test machine to make sure you increased flow? and actually not hurt the heads?

    I have alot of tools to test the heads we are doin it in my friedn percision machine shop. We are practiing on a supra head. Im haveing a valve job done, i just want to port the actual heads, i wouldnt do a valve job myself

    Well yeah i see alot of spaces that i can port down. I was jsut figuring thats all there is too it, making the walls small and polishing them without going to a certain width that is too weak or pointless. We are gonna pratcie on the supra heads, cause we have 3. I only have 1 set of ls1 heads.

    I know thats why i was asking, all the first 2 kdis told me was if you havent done it before dont try. How are you supposed to learn if you dont do it.

    I would do a lot of reading on it, ask lots of questions, maybe even try to watch someone and look at a good port job on similar heads. It's real easy to hurt performance on the heads if you don't know what you are doing.

    All I am saying is that you can actually do more harm than good if you don't know what your doing. If you remove too much material from a given spot you can actually hurt the velocity of the port and kill torque output.

    I've never seen a supra head, but if the two ports aren't very, very similar, you won't learn a whole lot. Thats why I recommended looking at an already ported LS1 head.

    Ok thats kinda why i posted on here doenst anyone have any pics or could take some of a ported head. I was hoping someone on here does there own and had pics. The heads arent even close, inline 6 cylinder 4 valves per cylinder.

    Pics can only show you a little bit, you really need to have a ported head in person to see what a camera can't show you and even to feel the difference.

    I have friedns who ahve ported there heads, but none of us have done it without adding other things, so its hard to judge the difference it made. Im doin a cam swap and new intake manifold along with this so i can tell by dyno numbers. Last friend who did it also put a cam in his lt1 at the same time. I guess we will just have to see what happens. What if i kept the same shape with everything but just thinned everythign down, then polished it.

    look around at some LS6 ported heads there not a bad price and prbably more powerful then ported ls1 heads

    There's nothing at all wrong with wanting to learn to do this stuff yourself. Have to start somewhere. I think what you have to keep in mind is that this isn't something you can just freehand your first time out and get right. At a minimum I would find someone local that ports heads and stop in and talk to them and see if they'll let you watch them work on a head and try to grasp their theory behind what they're doing. I would never attempt p/p my own heads but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. I would put a little time in researching ( which seems like that's what you're doing now) and practice with the tools on those other heads like you said then if you feel you can do it then try it. Having a way to test those heads is very important. I wouldn't want to work on the heads and not know if I was actually making progress or not.
    Here's another option. Buy some 853 heads which go for next to nothing and practice on those. You can get 853 heads for less than $100 sometimes. I have a set in the shed that I would sell but I'm gonna hang onto mine in case I ever need them. Good luck and post back up and let us know how everything goes.

    if you have some scrap heads to practice on the go for it but i would loon into cnc ported heads
