Oil pumps
I have enough reason to believe my oil pump is on the verge of crapping out so I am going to play it safe rather than sorry and replace it. Anyone have experience with Melling oil pumps? Also, does anyone have any input for an LS6 versus LS2 oil pump?
TIA

LS6 ported oil pump is what you want. There is even some issues to be had with oil pumps that have higher volumes then that. Since our Fbody LS1 pan is a limited size sump and limited capacity you run a risk of running your pump dry or starving it for periods of time *ex: hard cornering or braking*
So really the ultimate is the Ported LS6 its dependable, cheap and well matched for our oil capacity. Anything more then that is a waste and could potentially be detrimental.

Just curious, what makes you think that your pump is going out?

as long as we're talking about upgrades worth doing while you're in there it would be a good idea to upgrade to an LS2 timing chain as well as replacing the pick up tube o-ring. If you can swing it good time for a cam swap too if you haven't done it.

Oil PSI is real jumpy, I changed the sending sensor and that didn't stop it from twitching. Its possible its just the gauge being retarded, but oil PSI is not something I care to gamble with. Pump has 73k on it as well, so I would just rather be safe at this point and swap it.
I am well versed in the o-ring issues. I do plan to put an LS2 chain on but not interested in camming this car. I appreciate all the suggestions, but really just wanted to know if anyone had any experience or knowledge on the LS2 pump and how it compared to the LS6. I buy most of my stuff from TSP, LS1speed or the site sponsors as well
