Noisy Lifter
Hi folks, I'm new to this forum and new to the ls1 motor. I have about30k on an '02 Vette and have what sounds like to me a noisy lifter. It doesn't happen all the time but is bothersome. Anyone know anything about this?

oh wait, come to think of it, are you sure it's a lifter, or is it piston slap? B/c the ls1 is known for piston slap [light tapping at idle] and a lifter would be a prominent clacking sound that increases as the RPM's go up.

I would go with piston slap before a noisy lifter knowing the LS1's rep for that.

Wow, the "quick reply" is seriously fucked tonight. I guess time travel is possible.

a collapsed lifter is possible and is more common on LSx powered engines then most people know!
sounds like:
a rock being tossed back and fourth in your intake, sound comes from dead center in your engine. Also the noise is random, it comes and goes.
If your car is not under warranty, lifter replacement is very easy and fast. Granted though if it is a lifter you may have to resurface the cam or better yet install a new one like a 232/239. If the it is covered under warranty make sure the tech/dealer ships resurfaces the cam.
If its piston slap, your ls1 will sound like a diesel truck... tick tick tick.
I doubt its piston slap, yeah its possible but its not as common as most people think.
A bent pushrod. that is a possibility too. Is your car a Manual 6 speed or automatic. Bent pushrods are more prone to manual trans, do to people missing a shift and bouncing off the rev limiter. Again the sound is similiar to a collasped lifter!
hope this helps!
let me know if you have any more questions!

I never heard of it "coming and going" once it breaks, it makes the sound infinately. Never heard of the cam needing resurfacing either-atleast mine wasn't. Site your source?

A lifter is a little harder than you you make it sound considering you have to pull the head. I dropped a lifter when I put my cam in and it was a major pain in the A$$. Bent p/r's are probable but normally only in over revving an engine. Don't know how you drive but it could be a possibility. Piston slap is just a major problem in LS cars.
