new and need help with a cam install
I just bought a cam for my 1999 m6 and have a question about the install. When instead of the cam install tool is there anything else that can get the lifters up. or something I can do that will work lke the cam install tool. also im sure you all know about ls1howto.com. Since im not installing new springs for now, do I have to compress the springs and all that (Part 3), do I just skip that then
heres the link http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=23

I don't like the wooden ones, I bought 5/16" metal rods from HD. I then made these with them and ground the ends so they slide in nice and easy.

you'll have to spin the cam a few times to get the lifters up in the cups then those rods will slide in and hold the lifters up

I used the pen magnet method and worked like a charm on 2 cam swaps. What cam are you putting on? The stock springs can't handle very much over the stock lift.

a lot of people use that method but it's pretty risky. Only takes 1 dropped lifter to make you wish you would've spent the other $20 for dowels. I also bet you'll start hearing about more people dropping lifters over the next couple of years because the engines are just getting more miles on them and those lifter cups will have a little more wear on them.
