    98 T/A w/a little mods...

    Update:

I got my carb cleaner, WD40, rags, and q-tips plus thread chasers (Thanks Will) to start cleaning my block this week end. Already told the wife after work tomorrow I'll be camping out in the garage till Christmas eve. Getting everything ready to start assembly after I get my bearings on Jan 1st.

I need to lay out everything and do a full inventory of parts and stuff. Make sure no gremlins walked away with stuff.

I tried swapping out the oil fill tube off the oil valve covers and it broke/cracked.

Quick question: Paint or not paint the block? Pro's /Cons?

As it's an iron block I would paint it, primarily to keep corrosion at bay.

Even though it's not a Pontiac engine, I think it would look good in that shade of blue they used to be done in.

Car color is NBM. I've painted the intake and Fuel Rail Covers in that color too.

All my suspension is in black.

So when all said and done I've spent $3,811.29 for parts and an additional $625 for machine shop fees.

Add $250 if I had them take it to short block which I'm doing.

Those oil fill tubes always crack when you try to remove them. It seems like its almost impossible to remove and reuse them. Been there, done that.
And there is only 2 acceptable colors for a modern engine block...Black or aluminum. IMHO

So at great personal expense of pissing the wife off I stood my ground and escaped to the garage with my son.

We spent the last 6 hrs cleaning most of the 6liter bolt holes, couldn't get the back of block yet. Damn, there is a shit load of bolt holes.

Cylinder head bolt holes seem to be the worst to clean. 3 of them had crap compacted in so hard I had to make a pick long enough to get it loose.

Also I notice I think for the first time that the block is already painted black. I guess iron blocks come painted, kinda makes sense. All I need to do is a touch up her and there and it will be all pretty.

I got pics just waiting on photobucket to finish loading them.

I hear ya: as soon as I go outside to work on or clean the cars, my wife's clock starts ticking. I always detail her car first. It usually softens her up about the whole thing.
