All that's needed is the crank and shop time. Sucks I need to get the whole rotating assembly weight & balance again...

The replacement rod is off a few grams but it's the closest they could come.

Tonight I finally broke it all the way down.

Here's what #3 crank journal looks like up close.

I plan on replacing all the bearings anyways, but I just want to know does this wear look right for the very limited time it was run. I know it could be from the debris from the rod failure but ??? I guess I'm asking does it look like it needs a line hone for the main cap studs that were installed? Also it was something I had paid for and looks to me it wasn't done.

I also looked over the cam lobes and so far look very good, no damage. (Thank God!!)

I'll post some more close ups of the cylinders later.

Also does anyone know the trick to getting piston rings off without breaking them?

Mic it and maybe you can simply have the journal polished a bit... hard to tell from the pic.

Jeff, do you mean the crank? No worries on that, trying/waiting to order a new 4" K1 Forged Crank on the 1st. This will either get recycled or given to a buddy to make a lamp out of. He made my LS1 block into a coffee table.

Ok. I thought you were going to try to reinstall it.

Nope...Going to a 403ci build now. I always said that if I had to rebuild it, a 4" stroker crank was going to go back in. Doing a 403 instead of a 408 is because I'm doing this for longevity of the block. It will give me a least one more bore size to go to if I choose to go bigger later.

Besides just how much difference is there in 5ci?

Actually, there is another car that I pine after (NSX) which may provide some insight into that question. In 1991, when the car debuted, it had a 183 ci V6 making 270 horsepower and 210 lb.ft. In 1997, they bumped the displacement to 195 ci (they bored the cylinders; the crank/stroke did not change). The bigger engine produced 290 horsepower and 224 lb. feet. However, they also changed the exhaust manifold to a header-style manifold when they made this change.

When people have taken the 97+ manifolds and installed them on 96 or earlier engines, they see typical gains of 14 horsepower at the wheels, which accounts for the majority of the horsepower gained by the 97+ models. The 14 lb. feet at the crank is probably primarily a result of the displacement boost, making the power band broader, but achieving little in the way of peak power.

And that's a 13 ci increase. I suspect that 5 ci would make no difference to peak power, and probably a negligible difference to overall power/torque, especially since the majority of your displacement increase is gained by the crank. Boring out another 5 ci seems like it might be more trouble than it's worth. Just my $0.02.

^^ That falls in line with what me and FBJ discussed a little while ago when I talked to him about this. The difference can be made up in a Nitrous shot if I really want it

Yeah I think I might have a gap issue?

I know hard to see but the cylinder (this is the same one as the rod) looks good, no scratches and the cross hatching is still there.

I think I got real lucky. IMHO if these hadn't been forged rods they would have grenade the motor.

The piston on the rod had a little contact with the head but not to bad. A little roughed up but still good to use. I'll take some pics tomorrow.

Or get a big boy cam to match the new displacement

I'm going to see how this cam does for a bit. I plan on getting some good aftermarket heads later on I may get a cam to match it then.

I also had someone else look over those bearings and all off them had debris damage including the mains. I wasn't planning on reusing them. I knew better than that. Each bearing had deep enough scratches that hung up my finger nails as I ran across them. Not much but enough.

I'm wondering now if the oil pump is full of crap. Can you take apart a Melling? I see bolts on the face plate.
