Drop of the heads and with a quick once over he pointed to what was #3 cyl and said there's something wrong with this cyl. It's dead. See here how there's carbon on the others and nothing here. Looks like it was washed in gas but no combustion. So I feel a little better, He's going to look over everything, from the heads, trunion rockers & lifters. He said it could even be something as simple as the valve springs not set up properly.

Can you deburr the edges of the heads? Damn things sliced me up good last night. Feel like I got deep 10 papercuts. Damn bitch (the car) was pissed and wanted her share of blood.....

Also I'm going to sell my arp head bolts and convert to studs. Tired of fighting to get bolts off....

I just wear leather gloves when handling aluminum heads, they all have sharp edges. The way I understand it is that if you alter the edges that there could be some sealing issues, dunno. Is that the long & short bolt set for GENIII? Possibly might be interested.

    Preliminary call from the shop:

#3 cyl valves not seated fully.
    #3 valve guides need replace
    Several springs not setup correctly
    Several spring seats need replaced
Valve stems need some adjustments for the cam lift
One head needs a minor mill to level

Still waiting on word about the rockers.

Overall he said they look good, used, yes but still in great condition. Said nothing stood out as far as what would be making the noise.

    Soooo......on the right track?

$402 for getting the heads done. When I pick them up it I'll be getting a detail list.

Guess you get what you pay for, so much for cheap heads.

    Well here they are.

Complete Valve job, polish the stems, replaced valve guides, set up springs, and something with the stem tips (looks like they were filed) replaced the seats and milled the heads for level. Look so clean....

Hard to see but these were file or grind down on the top.

    And the rockers have passed.

Used 243 heads off a Vette (claimed by the seller)

I weigh the valves and they came in closer to true 243 sodium filled valves in weight vs non sodium fill. My problem is there's too much different #'s on what the sodium valves should weigh.

Worked on it a little last night.

I hate cleaning head bolt holes. MAJOR PITA!!

Use this to clean the holes. Like a fat girl dump on prom night went through a lot of towels. Got all but one bolt hole on passenger side cleaned up and studs installed. Last one must have some dried dirt in it. I cannot get the stud all the way in. sits about 1/8" higher than the others. I sprayed some carb cleaner in it to see if it will loosen what ever it is up.

    Lessons learned form yesterdays festivities....

    1) Passenger head is easy to install with studs.
    2) Driver head is a MAJOR PITA to put on with studs AND have the header laying in place. You will need to either remove the header or the bottom row of studs to be able to install the head. The steering column plus the header will not clear the head. Ended up pulling the bottom row of studs after fighting with it for an hour.

Heads are on and nuts installed but not tighten. Kinda makes you nervous because you don't want to drop a washer or nut. Not like bolts where they are easier to install.

Lesson learn today...ARP 12 pt nut can be rounded off. Of course it's the last one on last pass of tq to 80ft pounds. Calling ARP to see if they'll send a replacement. Lucky for me it's on #1 cyl and easy to reach.

Got lucky the nut came off. Now need to get a 1/2" 12pt deep socket so I don't screw up the new one.
