Yes and they are the only variable left. When I pulled the push rods, rocker and disconnect the injector on 3 the noise went completely away. Put them back on and noise return. That's why I pulled the head. I did have a collapsed lifter. But wondering if it was because the rocker?

Oil galley to the lifter? It's possible that there was some trash somewhere in the engine and that it plugged off the galley after the engine had been run a bit.

did you measure for the pushrods? I may have missed it if you did. Did you check the pushrods for that cylinder when you pulled them? Roll them on a piece of glass.

Orion yes, after the last head pull I triple checked the push rod length. I was given incorrect preload the first time so with the correct preload it comes to 7.4", that's why I went and ordered new push rods.

Talked with a mechanic buddy that had build his LS1 last summer. Showed him the video and he said he had the exact same issue with his. He's thinking that the lifters were not primed enough and that they need to be run a little while to prime them up.

Prior to assembly I did soak them in oil overnight. But to be completely honest, the motor sat for a 4-6 weeks before I was able to get a break in tune and start the motor up.

    Thoughts?

did you spin the motor prior to starting it? If you soaked the lifters they should've had oil in them. I would still spin the motor without the plugs in and the ign disabled to get oil to everything. Those lifters still should've pumped up though because it sounded like you ran the car for a little bit right?

    I..

installed the new rods = no change, noise still there.
swapped rockers for stock = no change, noise still there.
pulled rockers/push rods/disconnect fuel injector 1 cyl @ a time = went through all cyl & no change, noise still there.

starting to sound like it did when I blew the motor up...

I walked away trying to think of a plan of action before I do something that will cost me dearly....

damn Scott.....hate to hear that. I hope it didn't spin a bearing. Can you redneck stethoscope it to try and pin down where the noise is coming from? Does it sound like top end or bottom end? I went back and watched the video again and it's always hard for me to tell. I usually try to listen to the speed of the tap and that'll give you a clue as to where it's at. Hard to tell in the video with you idling it up whether it's crank speed or valvetrain speed. Maybe go cylinder to cylinder with a long handled screwdriver and give them all a listen to try and narrow it down. What does your oil pressure look like?

Scott, there's no that sound could be coming from up front around the timing chain? Just a thought, might be worth pulling the front cover and having a look.

So after I've had time to sleep on it....and cool off

Alex - yeah I thought of that this morning. Only thing I could see being an issue is the TrickFlo timing chain damper. So I'll most likely pull the cover off before I pull the block.

I'm trying to think of a way I can check all without pulling the motor needlessly.

That's a real bummer about the trouble man. I find that having one of these around helps pin point internal noises.

Ok as frustrating as it is it track this down. Using the probe we confirm it's not coming from the block or oil pan. We kept coming back to the drivers head, particular #3 cyl (again this one with the lifter). My buddy is thinking it may be a bad valve guide or slightly bent valve.

When I last pulled the head I didn't see anything out of place with the head however I really wasn't thinking it was an issue. I guess I'm pulling the head as plan.

    Thoughts?

well after 3 weeks of fun and school I finally had the motivation to pull the heads off. Dropping them off at the shop tomorrow as well as the rockers with the trunion upgrade and even the lifters. Having them check it all. Turned the motor over several times and didn't see any issues with the piston walls, so that's a good sign.
