Take the tried and true path.

    I would recommend:

    LS6 Intake : ~$300

The best heads you can get on your budget (can run from $1200-$2400, buy assembled with springs that will support your cam choice)

    a 224/224 cam on a 114 lobe sep. ~$400

head gaskets (select thickness to provide optimal quench for whatever heads
you get, might be some included with heads) ~$50-100

So you're looking at $1900-$3200 depending on how much you want to spend, and you will see around 390hp-410hp at the tire with a good broad powerband provided you have supporting exhaust, as opposed to the 350-360you'd probably see at the tire with just stock ls6 heads and an ls6 cam, also assuming a decent exhaust.

While you're at it, if you don't have a ported throttle body, slap one of those on there for $100-$150.

Then go buy some tuning software or roll the dice and pay someone else to tune it.

Why would anyone waste their money on a puny LS6 cam and LS6 heads? If a stock idel is a must...look at the LPE GT2-3 Cam or the TR CheaTr Cam which makes damn good power with a "sleeper" idle. There are plenty of affordable heads out there that make good power also.

I have a worn ls1, want to rebuild it getting the most horsepower without taking out a second morgage the engine also has piston slack i think thats what they call it. I read the forms about converting to ls6 but some of the other replys sound better. Since I don't know alot about these engines i'll take your replies to hart so spell it out to me if you don't mind thanks

Go with at least a 224 or a 228 cam. Otherwise it will be a total waste.

Take your time and do it from up top or drop the engine and CLEAN everything up and paint it and inspect and replace worn parts.

Texas Speed has the BEST selection of cams IMO
