Some may say its easy, I think its a pain in the ass on an F-Body but the feeling of accomplishment is worth it in the end if done successfully. You should be able to get to the lifters in a day (use wetvac to drain Rad, label all connectors, remove manifolds both intake and exhaust and heads and than have fun cleaning out each headbolt hole in the block). I admit I'm slow and procratinate, if I were you I would plan a few days or more. Also make sure you have everything you need like head gaskets and read up on it too. Good Luck.

You'll need a torque wrench and a torque angle meter.
Be careful not to break the oil sender on intake removal.
Don't be suprised to find one or two broken exhaust manifold bolts in the heads...depending on the mileage of the car
Buy new heads bolts and gaskets before you start.
Soak the new lifters in a jug of oil before installing them
Make sure head bolt threads are clean and no coolant is in them before re-installing heads.
Good luck!!

Pop the pins up that secure the cowl seal. Those little bastages are hand shredders.

I don't know how your doing it but, don't try to take the ps pump off of the bracket. leave the bracket on the pump and remove the 3 bolts that hold the bracket to the drivers side head. you need a gear wrench for the top one and a tiny socket ratchet for the bottom one..... good luck

most importantly!! you have to take the top one out last because the bolt has no space to move out as you losen it.
make sure you yell lots of curse words at it while you fight it.

Can't you just remove the...uhh forgot what its called.. but the shield thats between the heads to look at your lifters and cam? I've got my heads off as well right now, but I haven't actually took this "shield" off.. just a thought. If you do remove it you will need a new seal for it.

If you remove this shield can you take the lifters out without removing the heads. Maybe just loosen all the rocker arms so that the pushrods are removable and then the lifters can be removed. (I have never actually removed the shield and therefore have not seen the inside of the LS1). I am looking to replace lifters as well and wanted to know if heads have to be removed.
