Yes it is if you built it up but if your not going to spend cash for a decent cam which you say you dont want because you dont like the lobe nor will you spend a lot on some decent heads then def go with the ls6. It will make close to the same power as your mild 408, have better manners, and be more reliable since its a crate motor with a gm warranty

What all is needed to swap a Gen4 LS3?
Obviously its a 58X tooth wheel reluctor. But i found the LS3 crate...430 hp...$6700. conversion kit is $300.

    Yeah.
I mean i still have 5 or 6 months to decide. But as of now. I dont really know which way to go. Ls6 seems the best value. The ls3 looks good but alot of converson work id guess. And the 408 would require a large budget

i would love to have a ls3 or the ls376 hot cam engine, but the ls6 makes good power and is a simple install, read:less crap to go wrong and give me problems.good luck with what you decide to go with.

Ok, to get the ls3 to work in an fbody you'll need the following. I dont think that 300 dollar conversion kit comes with anythin but the conversion box.

Injector adapters to mate the stock ls1 harness to the ls3 injectors
    Knock sensor extension harness
    Cam sensor extension harness
    Map sensor extension harness
    Conversion Box 58x-24x
Cable Actuated t/b for 4 bolt intake
Custom dyno tune to get the ls3 to run.

If you go the ls3 route get the hotcam one from gmperformance parts its around 6k shipped and makes 480hp the ls6 though is still cheaper and would necessarily need a dyno tune but the ls3 is a monster under the curve for torque and hp compared to the ls6/ls2. The top numbers look the same but under the curve the ls3 is a clear winner.

The first one you would def need but that kit doesnt come with the conversion box which you need from lingenfelter. Also I dont see why you would need the bottom $300 piece because a new gen IV crate motor should already come with that stuff unless you were just buying the long block or short block a crate motor should be complete intake to oil pan. and any t/b will work thats for an ls engine and has 4 bolts no need for a specific brand

ya give or take there will be little unexpected expenses. id do the ls3 hot cam motor though more power and its about the same price. with that motor youd probably be around 450rwhp with bolt ons and have a gm warranty and reliability

Now that's out of the way, I have a z28 1998 camaro with an LS1 that has gone kaput and I am saving $4k towards rebuilding.

What should I do? I want as much horsepower as possible without blowing or using NOS. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I plan on spending the $4k on parts and labor. Thoughts on boring out and anything else?

So where can i find these?
    Knock sensor extension harness
    Cam sensor extension harness
    Map sensor extension harness
Cable Actuated t/b for 4 bolt intake

Then the fast injector adaptor, lingenfelt reluctor converson, and the engine should be good to go aftet a dyno tune?

as the the ls3 vs the hot cam ls3. This is what im thinking...and correct me if im Nieve.

I figure get the regular LS3 and later on get a custom cam thats more fit for my needs.
But then again. I dont know anythig about cams
And as time progresses...build it up to handle a procharger

If your not procharging it anytime soon id still do the hotcam cuz either way when you get a custom cam everything will have to be changed as far as the cam and springs go so might as well have the extra power for the same price now. If you plan to procharge it you would need a blower cam as the factory cam and especially the hot cam are really meant to handle boost.
the lingenfelter box you posted above is fine so get that,

    http://store.katechengines.com/cam--...rness-p18.aspx
    http://store.katechengines.com/injec...r-kit-p23.aspx
the tb is really up to you but fast, nick williams, bbk, are all good ones and the size youd need for the ls3 is 90mm
after this and a dyno tune it should be good to go the next question will be what rear end your gonna need lol

I'd say your right 35th,,,once you start changing parts the warrantly would be void. Kinda defeats the purpose of a warranty crate motor.

It seems Basham, you are leaning towards a larger 4" bore motor. From what I'm reading you are back looking at LS3's which are aluminum blocks.

Have you decided what you want for a power goal? ET goal? Or more importantly a budget goal? Are you dead set on a 4" bore or are you looking at these for a stroker build?

ya it seems he is kinda all over the place the problem with doing a custom build like a 408, 383 etc is that if you dont know what you want your end result probably wont be good. in this case hiis best bet is to go with a crate motor drive it for the 2yr/24k warranty and then mod the hell out of it maybe by then hell know exactly what hes looking for the ls3 package i listed above is head and heels better than a head/cam ls1/ls6 but either the crate ls3/ls6 iss a good option it just depends if he can hook the ls3 up and what his goals really are.
