know nothing about cams...
I know nothing about cams i need help. I want a cam that isnt to agressive. I dont want to have to change anything to my tranny just yet.I want a nice lope, with decent performance. what cam/head combination would I be looking for? what all do I really have to replace? This is my DD so im looking for a cam that is street/track friendly.
i currently have all the exhaust done. Long tubes, y pipe, and magnaflow catback.

If your first want is lope....then it may be time to look into a MuthaThumper cam.
The lope should be the LAST thing on the list of wants from a cam honestly.
You planning to install parts yourself or have a shop do it?
How much down time can you have?
Based off the brief info...I would say go with a 228R type grind.2008 Trailblazer SS
Yank PTB3600, Kooks 1 7/8" LT's, 4" intake, E-fans, Magnaflow, Sonnax kit, tranny cooler, tune.

What is the budget?? If you don't mind of course.
With a cam....
1. Cam
2. Valvesprings
3. Hardened pushrods
4. Oil pump (recommended, not needed)
5. Timing chain (recommended, not needed)

At that price...you are going to have to do the work yourself (with friends or whatever).
A CHEAP set of heads goes for $1300 new. So I think those are likely out of the question for now. Heads (and intake for that matter) can stay on for a cam swap.

Is the car a m6 or a4 because you need a stall with pretty much any aftermarket cam aside from the GM hot cam kit that will work with a stock a4 if it is a m6 then you have a lot more choices. I have a A4 and just did a TSP ms3 cam, dual sling kit, push rods, oil pump , and double timing chain but I also had to get a stall to go with it. I got the cam from a friend who didn't need it for a good deal but usually a cam is almost $400 shipped.
Ws6store has the pushrods on sale for $99 and my dual sprinkling kit coat me $250. High flow oil.pump was $160 and the double roller chain was $89. Then you need a tune also. Cost me a lot more than I though after the new fluids and gaskets.
Also the circle d stall was $400.

Get that done now. Its the best improvement/upgrade for an automatic LS1 anyways.
Because your car is DD, get nothing bigger than 3500RPM but nothing smaller than 3000.
Personally i have a 3000 TCI street fighter stall and a person would never know it because its just that tame.
You will also need a trans cooler, shift kit and have the trans tuned after everything is put in. I also had torque mgmt deleted.
The 1200 budget is gonna get ate up with a stall.2000 nhra edition formula

what model tranny do our cars have stock? mine is an 02..any stall number i should be shootin for? brand?

The tranny is a 4l60e...and make sure you get a stall for an ls1.
Personally I run a 3,800 in my daily driver. If you plan on going with a 224 or larger cam in the future I'd recomend a 3,600 stall.
Remember you get what you pay for! A Yank converter will set you back around $800-900, but will outlast your car

I would suggest the,
YANK SUPER STOCK 3200LS1
245mm, 3200 stall, 2.1 STR) The Yank Super Street 3200 is for enthusiasts running stock 3.15 gears, but want more "thrust" off the line. It bridges the gap between the Stealth 3000 and will hit the tires harder for excellent throttle response.

look at a TSP 224r cam pkg $590,maybe you can use a 112lsa with a stock stall that will lope some .the right exhaust will give it that muscle car sound.

alright stall it is...now lets talk heads. do i trully needs ported and polished heads or could i do some ls6 heads then get them ported and polished later on?
-

Stock for stock the ls6 heads flow alittle better than your original heads, but in my opinion they don't make a big enough difference to justify the work and money to do the swap...I'd get them and sit on them till you can afford the head work, then bolt them on, or buy a set already worked.
Also when you get them ported, have them milled too to bump your compression up
