i want a cam but i need some help
ok ive decided that i wanna throw a cam into my car to get some more ponies out of it. but right now i have no idea wat to get. im not looking for a high lift cam. id be happy with a more mild to mid cam. im going to get heads as well as a stall. but i really am not sure about the specifics that i need for any of these parts. if anyone has a couple of suggestions on cams that would fit wat im looking for id appreciate it. where would be the best place to order these parts? and exactly wat should i get when doing a cam swap. if someone could provide a shopping list of parts for doing a cam swap id appreciate it. wat kind of cam, heads, and stall do u guys suggest?

I dont know anything about stalls as i have an m6 but as far as your cam and heads i am about ready to do my heads/cam swap in a week or two. i bought most of my parts at texas-speed.com, i bought a package there that came with basically everything i need. i got prc stage 2.5 5.3l heads with a 228R cam at 112 lsa. you can choose any cam you want with the package. the package comes with dual spring kit with titanium retainers and chromoly pushrods which is a wise investment. As far as what cam is right for you its basically what you are wanting from the car. if you want stock like idle go with 114 lsa or if you want choppy idle go 112. my cam is 228/228 .588/.588. you have to remember that the bigger cam will get more horsepower, BUT you will get that hp by having to go really high rpms. I searched about cam testing and found a site (cant remember which one) where they tested 3 diff. cams. they smaller cam actually produced more torque than the bigger ones and produced the extra hp at lower rpm. The bigger cams produced more hp but not until high up in the rpm's. you said something more on the mild side so i would go with a 224 or 228.

id also recommend getting an intake so you can get everything out of the cam.
texas speed prc 5.3l heads, cam, dual spring kit, pushrods.........$1600
GM basic heads/cam bolt and gasket kit..................................$150
Also a good idea especially if your car has higher miles to get an ls2 timing chain and ls6 oil pump (if you get the pump make sure you buy a new oil pump oring bc the old one will leak if you reuse it)

so the difference between a 114 and a 112 would be in the idle? if its a choppy sounding idle i wouldnt really mind to much cause that would sound pretty sick i guess. and i think id rather have more low end power cause i live in nyc so during normal driving ill be lucky if i have the car shifting to 2nd before i have to stop agian. how much power would a mild or mid cam create? im hoping for at least like 30 rwhp. as far as intake i was thinking a fast 92/92 combo maybe in the summer

no dyno numbers yet, but got a very large gain in power in my 04 a4 goat with my mods and mild cam. ported and polished my stock 241 heads, 220/224 .570/.580 112lsa cam, comp 918 valve springs, 3,000 rpm stall and all other supporting mods. great low end power and pulls hard as hell to 6,400 rpm redline.

With city driving, get a TR 224. You'll have great low end power and just stick to your LS6 intake. No need to spend the 1200 for the FAST 90/90 when your not gonna really need it. 3000-3500 stall would be fine.

Going to HAVE to get a stall with a cam swap. Do a 3200ish stall if you want MPG and drivability even though a 3600 would be fine as well.
There is a lot to buy if you want to do a cam swap correctly

That would work with the TSP 228R.
2000 Z28: Accufab 4150, Vic Jr. 150 shot, Patriot stg 2 heads, big cam, FLT Stg VI 4L60, S60 rear. Waaay more stuff to list. 3100 LBS.

so right now im thinking about either the 224R and the 228R they got on texasspeed. shit my car is going to be ridiculously loud once i do a camshaft cause i got the slp lm and the headers. my neighbors probably hate me already. i set off at least one car alarm driving up blocks, now ill be gauranteed to set off at least half the cars i pass
