    How to get a choppy idle

    I want a new cam for my car, and i wanna put a different one in my truck too. What do you look for when you want a cam to produce a choppy idle. My car is not stock, it has headers, catback, a cam already in it, sfc, cai, and free mods. but my truck is a 89 silverado with a stock 350. I just want a streetable cam for both

    Well I'm just going for the sound of it in my truck, but I want it for sound AND performance in my car. Does to lobe seperation degree cause the sound or something like that, right?

    yes a lower LSA will cause the lopey sound... ie 110-112 to keep it streetable. also duration will play a factor also. 228+ dur. on a 112 LSA will chop pretty good. or go with a T-Rex cam 240+ dur. on a 109.? LSA those chop pretty hard...lol. for good streetability and choppy making pretty good power with a nice power curve the 228s are pretty good choices on a 112 LSA.

    a 224 or a 228 cam with a 112 lsa while have a nice lope.
    or you can get a 114 lsa cam and have the tuner lower you idle so it chops.

    what cam do you have now??

    Its a comp cam but I dont know the spec's or anything

    Thats not good, not knowing the specs... just buy one brand new that way you know where it has been and what it is. but yeah I forgot about those pesky 224s, they have some good power under the curve too.

    Overlap is what gives you the choppy idle. More overlap more lope. If you want to know how much overlap a cam has try this add the intake and exhaust duration together then divide by 2. Now take the LSA and multiply it by 2. Subtract the LSA from the duration average and that will give you your overlap. This is not an exact way of figuring I'm sure, but it works.
    I + E = X
    X/2 = Y
    LSA x 2 = Z
    Y - Z = Your overlap.

    I'm trying to plan my heads and cam setup for a FI build, I'm thinking 500 rwhp. I'm new in this department so I could use some input. my understanding of this so far is that you don't want a really raunchy cam for a FI car right? why is that?
    what does the LSA stand for? or what is it exactly? should I be getting one with about 118?
    and what size of heads should I get? 64cc? sound right?

    here, look at my dyno sheet for example...

    i have a nice long, flat TQ curve that gives 'x' amount of TQ over a wide RPM range. a 224 cam is not a peak HP/TQ cam, it's an under the curve cam that power starts early and stays damn near steady the whole RPM range...

    Mine car has a date with the dyno doctor to get it running right (running really rich) and see what my numbers will be.
