Heads/Cam Question
In a month or so I'll be looking to get a good heads/cam package... Because of the positive feedback on the 228R for a daily driver, I think I'll be going with that cam..
But I don't know what heads to get to go along with it. I would like to stay away from the AFR's, simply because of the price, and go with something a little more budget friendly.
Any suggestions on what kind and brand would help me out a lot.. Thanks guys

There have been several people on here that have done well with the Patriot heads, which are a great deal costing as much as getting a set of 243s ported at a shop.
The two sets of heads that I am thinking for my car eventually are AFRs and Trick Flows, but neither brand are very budget friendly.

im running Patriot Stage II Ls6 "style' heads (old 6.0L truck head castings): 59cc, 2.02" int/1.57"ext...
those heads, a Comp 224, a FAST 90/90, SLP Lid, LT's/TSP TD's have gotten me to 437rwhp/404rwtq (not being retuned since installing the TD's)...
the 228r is a strong cam and you will be pleased regardless of what heads to end up running. others will say Patriots are a waste of money, have issues, or that other heads of more superior quality and power output can be had at the same price yet (blah, blah, blah)...
i have had these heads on my car of over a year now and have not had a single issue...2018 CTS-V: °°668rwhp/658rwtq°°

are these the ones you got SSwt :

The patriot site is under construction right now so I don't know if I found the exact ones.
Also, what's the difference between 59cc and 67cc?

I think they were around $1200 - $1600 if I remember right.. Patriot's are cheaper..
And Jay, how come you went with 1.5 instead of 2?

those look like them. the direct link i have to the Ls6 "Style" heads is down, but from what i read, they are identical...
the difference between the 59cc and 67cc is that the 67cc is the stock (or close to stock, maybe 64cc...?) Combustion Chamber size while the 59cc is smaller which increases CR (Compression Ratio) to around 11.0:1 -11.5:1 for a little more power. however you have to run 91+ or higher gas as a result of the increased CR...
with my 224 .581 @112lsa these heads worked just fine with 7.4" pushrods and no flycutting of the pistons...

Not always, it all depends on flow rates, basically what you want is high flow rate compared to a small runner. You also need to match up your cam/heads to get the most out of them.
I know you are wanting around 450 RWHP with a h/c car, but that is hard unless you really match up the right cam and heads. You also want to consider the type of power curve you are wanting as well. Some combos will be more peaky then others.

Got a killer deal on the Head/cam package for $1000, Then for everything else (Pushrods, fast 90/90, Ported/shimmed ls6 oil pump, LS2 timing set, Head bolts, gaskets) I am into the whole deal for $2400. Texas Speed has been VERY VERY good to me on their sales.
I also am going to buy some Ultra light Yella Terras for $360 shipped.Last edited by Jays00ss; 01-22-2008 at 11:16 AM.
