H/C/I Swap...pull motor or leave it?
I have a friend (mechanic) helping me with my H/C/I swap in 4 weeks and he is insisting that it will be easier if we pull the motor (out through the top), than if we were to leave it in the car. He is citing that torquing down the head bolts is a bitch with the motor in the car. I'm arguing that we shouldn't be doing 2-3 more hours of labor if the head bolts are the only concern.
Any input?
PS: My friend is a big guy, so I can understand where he is coming from with the head bolts, but I can do them if he can't

My buddy (mechanic) says the same thing. Pull that bitch, then you can make sure everything is in order and makes the cam swap much easier. I vote for pull, thats what I'm doing.

When we are going to my H/C/I, my buddies (mechanics) and I will be taking it out also. Just seems easier to work on the engine while its on a stand then trying to lean over the fender of hours...Also if he has the cherry picker and the stand, why not?

Pulled mine from the bottom. So much easier to do it all. Can drop the motor in about 1 1/2 hours if you got a buddy with a lift like I do.
Here is a thread of mine with a shit load of pics http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80464

i pulled my motor in my drive way out the bottom. makes it much easier to work on. Its well worth the extra 3hrs labor (out and back in) to have the room and make sure things are right. But make sure the engine comes out the bottom, not the top!

I've done them in car and dropping out the bottom. If ya can drop it go for it as its easier but at the sametime its not horrible to do it in car either. I've pulled an engine out the top before never again.
If you can get your buddy to see the light I can give ya a hand if you guys are nervous about dropping it

Drop it out the bottom if you have a lift to use.

i would never pull motor from top. drop it out is faster
now for HCI i would do it in the car. its alot less work IMHO

I will have to post pics, but it was pretty easy to drop out the bottom. I did all the work by myself with a cherry picker so having a lift, it shouldn't take you all that long. When you doing this, I may come down and lend a hand if you'd want, or I can just drink beer and be a cheerleader

Pulling it from the top will be a PITA compared to dropping it out the bottom. I've helped pulling them from the top, I've done H/C swaps in car, and I've dropped the entire powertrain out the bottom. The H/C swap in car takes about the same amount of time as dropping it out the bottom and performing everything. If you've got a lift, drop it out and swap everything. Makes wrestling with the headers, head bolt torquing, ground straps, etc much easier. Depending upon the date and shop location I may be able to swing by and offer some help...

Orange- 1999 Camaro
I'm in the process of doing a cam/intake upgrade and have pulled the heads, intake, cam, etc with the engine still in the car. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...the worst part being trying to get the bottome bolts of the heads out as the headers were in the way most of the time. Right now, the new cam is in and I'm working on getting it all back together now.
