A few final questions on H/C build

These should be my final questions before I finish purchasing the rest of my go fast parts and start assembly on my baby. I recently picked up some (Triangle #243 LS6 heads) and are having them gasket match ported and polished and milled. My first question is how much can I mill off of them and be safe. I don't want to fly cut the pistons at all, that is for certain. I have did searches on google and here but found nothing. Next is I have decided I want to go about 1 step bigger then the LS6 cam, I believe the lift is some where in the range of .551 or so for the LS6, I was thinking about a .560 lift with a higher LSA. Does anyone know of a cam that fits the profile I was thinking of? Will a .560 lift work with the stock yellow springs? These are the other items I got:

    LS7 Lifters
    LS2 Lifter trays
    Chrome Moly push rods
    LS6 Heads

Also I am having the springs tested on the heads and the heads tested before installation. Any help on the questions would be appreciated.

I think I found my cam.

    Lunati 224 -- Lift: .560/.560 Dur@.050: 224/224 LSA: 112

Anyone used this cam or something similar. While searching, I have gotten lost on the spring issue, some say .560 lift, some say .580 lift for the yellow springs. Anyone want to elaborate on that also.

first off, nomatter how small of a cam you go with you need to upgrade your springs.
take a look on ebay for the HR284 (fresh cam) copy 220/224 .570/.580 with your choice of 112,114, or 116lsa. $115 + $17 shipping. use the money you save on the cam to buy a set of comp 918 springs.
I have this cam with the 112lsa and love it, and there are some others on here running his cams also.

What kind of power do you think your putting down with that cam. I obviously will be over 400 rwhp with my mods but kinda interested and impatient. I can't wait to get it done so I can get my first dyno tune.

im running heaveily ported and polished 241 castings and i can tell you with that cam, 3,000rpm stall and all other supporting mods its a beast drives like stock but pulls so much harder than it did before when you get into it , plus the 112lsa gives it a good choppy idle

Does LSA just affect idle or is there a second reasoning behind it? I think I will pick up that cam this weekend off of ebay, once the paycheck comes in.

the smaller lsa gives you a little gain in torque, but lets more unburnt gases out of the motor raising your emissions output......plus gives that distinct choppy idle......if your state is very strict on emissions you might want to stick with a 114 lsa. Maryland just plugs into your ODB2 plug and checks for emissions codes so i get by free and clear even with long tube headers, 3" true duals and no cats

I don't need to worry about emissions I live in Wisconsin
I think I will go with the 112 LSA then, I want that Torque

For sure get springs man. No matter what you do, Do not skimp on springs. Any reason why your looking at the 224's? Not that I dont think ins a decent cam, but you can go larger and still have it drive like stock. Im not a fan of huge choppy cams for the street, but a 228 or similar will run almost like stock with a good tune on the street guaranteed. Do some more searching on here and Tech on the 228 vs 224. And maybe some other popular cam sizes. A cam is the most important decision you will make for you car.

have you looked at the 228r came from TSP? it would fit your smaller cam profile while making a little more power, just a suggestion...

If you mill the heads to 59cc you should be over the 400 rwhp mark barely without having to flycut with that cam.
2000 Z28: Accufab 4150, Vic Jr. 150 shot, Patriot stg 2 heads, big cam, FLT Stg VI 4L60, S60 rear. Waaay more stuff to list. 3100 LBS.

TSP 228R Camshaft 228/228 .588/.588 114 LSA found my eye and with the power increase I have seen claimed, it would fit my plans perfect. Going to call TSP tomorrow and find out what size push rods and which springs would work with it. Think I may have it figured out finally, damn cam choice is super hard to pick.

Yes it is, and you should spend lots of time researching what will work best for you. The 228 and 224 are proven performers. You might also want to consider a cam with a little more exhaust than intake.

Problem is, the more I research (which I have did a good amount) the more confused I get and end up changing my mind over and over again. I like the power gain that was advertised for the TSP cam I posted.

GOD DAMN IT!!! Someone should have warned me before I bought the car in 2001 that modding was like crack/cocaine. Now after doing more searching, I might just say fuck it and get the torquer2. Arggg by the time I buy a cam, it will probably have .998 lift or some shit like that (being sarcastic)

Personally I have nothing against the TSP cams. With that said remember advertising is just that advertising. Look around on the forums about Royal Purple.

Best ways I think to do research is just what you are doing. Read ALOT, and talk with lots of people as well. See how their cars do etc. I personally called up many different shops as well (all the sponsors here + that sell custom grinds). You will start to get an idea what you want eventually. Personally, I seem to like the way that the Vengeance cams come out, very close to the TSP ones just they put a little more exhaust on them.

Something else I have learned from when I was researching, you will come up with 50 very close alternatives. In the end you have to bite the bullet and decide. Luckily, if you get a good idea about what you want than all those different cams should not be that radically different.

Disclaimer: **** can still happen in the while trying to figure things out and they could be radically different cams.
