Looks like I didn't clear this bolt hole good enough and this caused a blow out. I must have missed it and had some liquid still in it. A costly mistake but I'm moving on now to better things.

Before I sold the block off we looked it over one more time and my buddy realized it was a cylinder bolt hole.

One of my local car club members bought the block to make it into a coffee table.

That could be it -- there are warnings in the shop manual about making sure that the head bolt holes are free of all fluids before installing the heads.

I did or at least I thought I did. I'm not sure how I missed it.

It really doesn't take much fluid to do that really. You probably did get the vast majority out but left a little in there that pooled to the bottom or something. When I did mine I spent a large amount of time on those bolt holes getting them cleaned out. Blew with air, used pieces of paper towel rolled up into booger pickers, and my wife brought home some Q-tips on real long sticks like you see at the dentist. My bolt holes were as dry as a popcorn fart before I put the bolts back in.

The use of long Q-tips is a great idea. I'll have to keep that in mind as I generally just use compressed air. Unfortunately, with oil it just smears it around rather than evacuating it from the hole like water or coolant.

The long q tips would have been useful for me but I couldn't find any so I bought standard sized ones and taped them to chop sticks , worked the same.

Sounds like that would work too. My wife is a nurse so i got the hook up. Also get free towels to clean the car with & I have some "meat grippers" that lock open to hold a wound open while in surgery. Haven't really found a use for those yet but i'm sure i will eventually
