Does the 98-00 model LS1's have more top end power than my 2001 Trans Aam?

I have a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am. I have read that may car has the smaller truck cam in it. My question is, does the 98-00 model LS1's have a lot more top end power because of their bigger cam and would it be a good upgrade to put the larger cam in my engine. I raced my car at the local drag strip two weeks ago. It is a bone stock 3.23 geared automatic car. My best time on street tires was a 13.5 103 mph with a 2.08 60 ft in 83 degree weather. My 1/8 mile time was 8.79 at 82 mph. Is this time pretty decent for my car or should it be faster. Also, how much power would I get at the wheels if I got a SLP air lid ,and a hooker cat back, and would a computer tune from PCM for less be a good mod.

    01-02 models have more power.
as for top end pull, some LS1 cars came with the 2.73 rear end gear which would make it pull better than a 3.23 car.
the lid and exhaust will net you around 15 rear wheel horsepower.
leave the computer alone for now.

I have a lightly modded 02 Z28 (free mods, pulleys, lid, tune, cutout) , I ran 13.3 in warm weather and a 2.33 60 foot time on Nitto DRs. Mine is also an A4 with 2.73 gears. just for comparison...

I have a 2K Z with A4 2.73 mods: TDs, lid, FRA, TB bypass and I'm going to run it in a 1/4 this year before LTs.

I'm getting my car dyno tuned this wednesday from PCMforLess. I also have a bunch of mods I did also 2 weeks ago. I live 10 minutes from the guy, I hear he is really good. I'll try to let you know.

the 01 and newer have a slightly smaller cam. They also have no egr, better ls6 intake and bigger injectors.

all else being equal, the 01+ are stronger.

well all else equal isnt the case- 01 02 ls1 cars came with higher flowing cylinder heads from what ive researched,so bigger intake, and heads, but smaller cam.but then some say the reason for that rumor is because of the ls6 heads that came on 25% of 2002 f bodys-

LS6 blocks were used in some '01 and '02 f-body's. Not sure on the heads though.

[B]now the blocks in 01 ls1's have superior oiling capacity than the earlier yers, reserarch the net some factory freaks in 02 came with ls6 heads and some came with ls6 block and or ls1 heads.there is a serial tag on the back of the cylinder head (cant remember which side) looks like a bar code.you can see this by looking town the trans tunnel while underneath.the numbers will tell you if the block is ls6-the heads you can tell by the casting on the passenger side head

depends on the cam. there are plenty of them that produce impressive numbers through manifolds. CheaTR will do well without headers.

Ummm...I think you have it reversed.

An A4 LS1 with 3.23 gears will pull much better than a car with 2.73's.

No. You got it reversed. 2.73s will pull harder on top end than 3.23s. 3.23s/3.73s/4.10s will pull harder on low end than 2.73s.

I guess because you said it that makes it true

I guess it really depends on the power of your car. Your putting a greater load on the car with the 2.73 and will be more suspect to detonation by gas and or weather which I saw on the Dyno with my 2.73 car. Especially when rolling through the traps just a little ways into 3rd gear. I would rather run through 1&2 a little quicker to get in the meat of the powerband in 3rd. The motor would not be as stressed with 3.23 vs. 2.73. Just my opinion no expert here
