is degreeing a cam necessary when do a cam swap only
first off I do know what it is and what it entails but I am asking this question because I've seen writeups that say you have to do it and some writeups that don't include it.

It is a way of checking the accuracy of the cam against the specs provided on the card.

I realize that.. I'm simply asking: are most cam manufacturers that inconsistent with their grinds that it then becomes a necessity to degree the cam because you could possibly get a cam that is way out of spec?
i'm hoping that it's not that big of a deal because I don't have a degreeing kit and I don't feel like buying one.......yet lol

its like russian roulette with your valvetrain. you could miss the bullet...
you most likely will not hurt anything but you could have hard starting, or the "power band" will not be what the cam card states. you can imagine the tuning headache that could follow. there's my .02Last edited by panicrev; 09-08-2010 at 03:42 AM.

Did my first Heads and Cam install on my LS1 Camaro SS and did not degree CAM. Just followed ls1howto instructions to a tee and all turned out well for me. Is it a must? probably not, but highly recommended.

...here's bottom line fellas. You dont necessarily have to degree your cam in, especially now. Cam companies now degree a certain amount of advance for "straight up" installs, which gets you in the ball park. Degreeing a cam gets you to "Home plate", which assures cam timing for maximum power, based off it's basic design principle from the manufacturer. Recommended, yes...most definetely!! Required, no...not actually. Take your pick?

my long term goal is to put in a lq9 stroker. at that point in time I will definately be double checking everything includeing degreeing the cam, but my current plans only involve rebuilding my top end on the stock block. p&p 241's a spring kit, cam and intake and if I can get away with not degreeing I'm going to.
thanks for the replys guys
