Carbon build up?

Here's the deal, yesterday I took my car to the dyno to get a baseline. We had to abort my first run due to a VERY lean a/f @wot (14.7). The tuner at the shop was able to get it down to a 12.5, but he had to take his laptop down to a 10 to get that. Everyone at the shop seemed to think that the top end of my engine is carboned up, and that is what's causing the lean condition. Has anyone had this problem?

I'm going to have the top end cleaned next week. Then I will run it on the dyno again to see if we still have a problem. I was just curious if any of you had any other ideas,if the cleaning doesn't cure it...

Please help...

Not sure why carbon would cause a lean condition, detonation yes. You might also look at using FP60 in the fuel, the LS1 seems to build carbon very quickly.

Use a can of BG 44k and that will clean your entire fuel system.

Where can I find BG? Someone told me they make a 3 part, top end cleaning system.

I noticed this as well yesterday while tearing my motor down to install the cam, there was alot of carbon buildup inside the motor. I've had the oil changed every 3,000 miles at the dealership too. My old 305 in my 87 camaro was as clean as a brand new motor at 210,000 miles when I tore it down, doesn't make since that my Z-28 would have more crud build up in it.

I do not like the "one can" fix as they contain tons of caustic chemicals....and you may have chunks of crap breaking off and clogging up "stuff".....I use with great success a milder solution that slowly dissolves carbon and crud.....in two tankfuls you will feel the difference.....

Berrymans fuel inj. cleaner works VERY well also and you can get it at Autozone for $3-4.....
All the shops I know of use there product for the past 8 years.

There's also an additive called Techron Concentrate which will clean out the fuel system and remove combustion chamber carbon deposits. All the major car manufacturers recommend using it. Get the 20 oz. bottle.

I did not know our engines were susceptible to carbon build up. BTW, where did you go for the dyno? How much?

i ran seafoam in mine, havent ran it all through yet, used it mostly as a fuel preservative

i plan on getting another can of it to run through when it comes back on the road in may

+1 seafoam....i did feel a lack of power the first day after running it but it's probably because it was all over my motor, which is good!

Try seafoam man. It works great. My buddy and I did it and it made a big difference. My car wasnt that bad, but his 00z smoked like a mutha. If you dont know how to use it let me know. Good luck

Two thumbs up for the SeaFoam. I ran about a half of a can through the brake booster line, and dumped the rest in the tank. I couldn't believe How much smoke poored out...

I also cleaned the MAF, it was filthy. I'm pretty sure this has solved my problem. The car feels stronger shifting from 1-2, and from 2-3. It used to stumble if you hit second too hard...

If properly utilized SeaFoam works very well. Get 2 cans...One can in the gas tank....half a can in the oil and the other half poured slowly into a vacuum line leading into the manifold...(Brake vacuum line is what I use)....drive the gas thank empty....drain the oil and replace the oil filter....I always replace the fuel filter at this point....your good to go....

seems kinda overboard to be putting that much seafoam in the car...in the oil??? I used 1/2 a can in the brake booster line and that was enough 4 me.
