This motor was built last March. I had a local engine builder who specializes in LS1s build it (the shortblock).

I was told by the engine builder to adjust the rocker arms to 1/4 to 3/4 turn past zero lash. I had to use Crane shims to shim the rocker arms since the heads were milled .03". The actual preload was about 1/3 to 1/2 turn which comes out to about .03". From what I have read, this is about the right amount of preload.

As far as break in goes, I understand that the rings seat pretty quickly on these motors. And that the first time it gets off the dyno, its pretty much broke in.

I am running 11.3:1 CR and using 93 octane gas.

you are really pushing the limits on that 92 octane 10:1 is about the limit

I was told by this engine builder and a few other sources that on aluminum headed LS1s the CR limit is 11.3:1 on 93 octane. Yes, I guess I am pushing the limits abit

    yes and yes

The problem appears to be in the tuning as discussed above. At this point, I'm just going to shop around for another tuner.

No prob man, and believe me, I appreciate all the help. I'm just trying to exhaust all efforts before digging into the motor first. I can see your point though, pre-ignition could cost me some timing due to the knock sensors going off. I just wish my tuner would have been for communicative and forthright about all this information. I'm ready now just to write it off and look for a new tuner at this point due to this issue and some other issues with this shop. Sometimes you gotta just cut your losses and move on....

Thanks for all the help guys. Every one of you had good points and I learned ALOT

There is a slight difference with the LS1. The aluminum heads allow for more compression on pump gas. Stock the LS1 is 10.1:1 and runs fine on premium.
    LS6 is 10.5:1, and isn't the LS7 11:1??
Mine is 11:1 and I have nothing but 91 octane here. No knocking at all.

Did your tuner do a Speed Density tune??
