    Cam swap questions.

I am thinking of putting in a 228R cam in my 99 SS. It has 96,xxx miles on it, and no mods. Would I need to change purchase new lifters and rocker arms or just push rods and springs to go with it?

I'm going to be putting in a cam this winter (228 or larger) and I've been told the DEFINATES are springs and pushrods. I'm doing new lifters (you have to pull the heads for it) timing chain, ported ls6 oil pump, pushrods, and possibly valve seals.

Long tube headers an ORY, and an exhaust would be a good idea also, to help it breathe better. Possibly even ls6 intake or FAST 92/92...

I think you'll be fine with out changing the lifters. What springs will you be using? Just wondering how much spring pressure will be on em. I'd just swap the cam and if it taps from a collapsed lifter at start up then worry about changing them.

I was going to get the rods, cam and springs (918) from Texas Speed as a set.

I just got the 224R from TSP as a kit, I'd say go with the PRC Double Spring kit instead or the 918's. Its a few bucks more but you get what you pay for!!!

Since your not pulling the heads off you'll be ok not replacing the lifters. Definitely new pushrods and springs though. You'll want to replace the timing chain and oil pump while your doing the swap though. If you want, get an UD pulley while your at it.

Personally I feel PRC duals are overkill for a 224 cam. I'd go (I did) with 918s and the titanium retainers, makes for a great light weight valve train set up with great control.

lifters are certainly overkill for a 228 however they can't hurt either if you dont mind doing the extra work its a cheap 150$ for some LS7's...

for a cam only build an no heads I think a 90/90 is huge overkill an LS6 would be well worth the money though.

Not if the cam is big enough. I know alotta guys (myself included) with 230+size cam only setups that throw down some good #s, on the dyno and at the track. If you want an all out cam only set up it's a good mod imo.

true enough... its certainly not a waste of time... however in my opinion I would buy supporting heads before a fast90/90... however both will result in power gained no doubt... the obvious goal is to acquire both at some point right

Well not in my case. Cam only guys I know run 11.2-11.3 these days. If I got heads my car'd need a rollcage which I don't really wanna do. Mid 11s fast enough for me. I just wanted an all out cam only car. May get heads some day but I have no plans in the near future for em. Others may have different goals I do realize.
